Some schools do take books, especially children's books from a family who has outgrown them. It's usually up to the librairian to go through the books and find what is appropriate to keep and then put them on the shleves. But one school in the area where I worked got a nice donation of about ten boxes of children's books in excellent condition. They never made it out of the box, as people were just too "busy" to sort through them.

About the veteran's story, absolutely fascinating. And I thank him for his service to our country. Many veterans don't talk about what they went through. Only recently did my family find out that our Uncle Morty was in D-Day and landed at Normandy.

He also has a Legion of Merit, which, although not earned in combat, is a higher award than a Bronze Star (even with combat "V").

My hometown newspaper has been doing a column like this for the last ~3 years. I love reading it when I go back to visit. My father was interviewed for it one time - he never talked to us about Vietnam. Most of the vets from that war won't (unless they are talking to one another). Doing stories like these seem to bring it out of them.

I encourage you to do more of these. At the least you will probably be making a veteran's day simply by giving him or her 15 minutes of your time.

Sarah, thanks for that info. I figured that something like that might be the case. Is there a "Friends of the Petworth Library?" Seems like it would be a worthy organization to support...

Dear 100yearsoftrash -- What would school kid today do with "A Farewell to Arms," "Great Gatsby," "Catcher in the Rye." I'm assuming you meant the books would be older and not something else more ignorant.

I'm not sure that discarded books from a WWII home would be relevant to today's elementary school readers.

There is a lot in the news about the schools right now. Does anyone know if the schools can accept book donations?

The library cannot acquire books for the collection expect through the approved acquisitions process. Donated books have never been able to become part of the collection. Most branches sell them to raise money for the use of the branch (often through the "Friends of XYZ library" group), or give them away to neighbors to build goodwill.
