Breaking News: 4 Shot in Columbia Heights

According to Fox News Channel 5 four people were shot on 14th and Harvard this evening. I wasn’t able to find a full article on their Web site but I will update tomorrow morning.

And here is the article from the Washington Times.

The article finishes with a quote: “Whatever police are doing is not working,” said Council member Jim Graham, Ward 1 Democrat. “This is a real setback.”

Verizon Center Have Some Self Respect

Verizon Center Ad, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Good lord, have you seen the Verizon Center lately? In the Gallery Place metro there are dozens of posters celebrating its 10th anniversary. And then I see this. I’m not sure if you can tell exactly just how large this sign is but it must be at least 50 feet by 50 feet. It is huge. And this is how they chose to adorn the Verizon Center on its 10th anniversary? Two and half men? Doesn’t the Verizon Center get millions of dollars for the name Verizon Center alone? That’s not enough? They have to put the biggest most garish tv ad up as well. In French we would say the Verizon Center is behaving like a Pute.

A Historic CVS

IMG_5709, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

This is the new CVS located at 10th and U. But I took a look at the little sign outside and it revealed that the CVS is housed in a historic DC building. So I ask you, is it a shame that a historic building now houses a CVS or is it great that the building still exists and there is a little sign to commemorate its past?

According to the sign the building has been an “important social and cultural center.  In addition to the Masons, it has housed a bowling alley, ballroom, and restaurant.”  And now a CVS.  Maybe I’m just looking a bit too deeply into this.  If it housed a bowling alley surely it can house a CVS…but, man, a bowling alley would be way cooler.

Brick or White?

I know we’ve discussed this in the past but I think the natural brick looks better in this instance, what do you think?

Panam International Supermarket

Has anyone checked out this international supermarket on upper 14th St.? (Damn, I forget the cross street.) I didn’t have a chance to check it out yet but I bet you could find some sweet delicacies there. So tell me, am I wrong?

Red Rocks Outdoor Freezer

Again, I like the big piles of wood. I swear I’m not obsessed with pizza. Ok maybe I am a little bit. Have you ever seen an outdoor freezer before?

Best DC Dive Bars

I saw this link in Wonkette about the best Dive Bars in DC from Gridskipper. Mt. Pleasant’s the Raven is number one, Columbia Height’s Wonderland is number four and U St.’s Polly’s is number six. What’s your favorite Dive Bar? While I don’t like the use of the term Dive Bar, while new, my vote would definitely be the Red Derby.

We Have a New Record

I saw this ad in Craig’s List asking $900,000 for a house in Petworth. It says the location is Georgia Ave. and New Hampshire Ave. I can’t think of a house around there that could possibly go for 900k but more power to them if they can get it.

Move Over Starbucks

Georgetown Valet, famed dry cleaners, is now going to take over the world or at least DC. A little birdy told me that another Georgetown Valet is coming to 14th and V in the new PN Hoffman building across from the Langston Lofts and Busboys and Poets. Hell, I like ‘em.

Better Hurry President’s Day is a Long Ways Away

IMG_5676, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Well, if the building only has (I’m guessing) four units total do you really want to celebrate that you only have two left? I love the false sense of panic it instills. It reminds of car commercials on TV.

I am always fond of the car commercials that announce “incredible savings” every single month. Whether it is Columbus Day Sale, Veteran’s Day Sale, President’s Day etc. They always say “this sale only lasts through the end of the month”. But then there is a new sale every single month. Do people really run out and buy a car/condo out of panic that they’ll miss the sale?

Car Crash at NH and Shepherd Last Week

Thanks to a reader for alerting me. I’m not sure if the wall won or the car won. I’m guessing the wall won despite some cosmetic injuries.
