Pretty Good Renovation

Dear PoP-Volume 24

Dear PoP,

Since this will be my first Halloween in the neighborhood, I was wondering if you could provide some advice on providing candy to trick-or-treaters. Do kids trick-or-treat in Petworth/Columbia Heights?

Thanks!

First Timer

Dear First Timer,
Hell yes they do! Our cousin to the east, Frozen Tropics, wrote a pretty good post on this topic that is worth checking out.

I can assure you that the kids of Petworth/Columbia Heights trick or treat with gusto! Honest to God you will see some of the cutest kids on the face of the earth. It is true not all will be wearing costumes but who cares?! Buy plenty of candy and be especially prepared during the hours of 6-8pm. In the past I haven’t witnessed any destruction at all (knock wood). This is a great time to become a part of the community. Enjoy!

I’m usually prepared when trick-or-treaters knock on my door, but last Halloween, no one came by. Sometimes we even get uncostumed older kids, but who cares. I just have a bag of something good by the door. And don’t think about baking anything or giving away fruit or sum$#%^like that. Safeway has bags of Halloween candy and that’s what our kids want.

This will be our fourth Halloween in Petworth. We get 40-60 kids each year and always have a great time handing out the loot. We have not witnessed any destruction or mean-spiritedness – just kids out to have a good time.

We get shloads of kids (up in the 7th St and Gallatin area), and always run out early even though we buy a bunch of candy each year.

The kids are always super-cute, and most are very nice and polite – quick with thank you’s. We’ve even had some compliment us on our house – although I think this is a clever ploy to get more candy out of us. :-)

We get a few people who are too old or aren’t dressed up, and I usually give them a light hearted, “Who are you dressed up as?” and begrudgingly give them one bit of candy and look forward to the little tikes who are dressed up.
