Sushi Bar on U St. is Open

Er,uh…Really?

IMG_5750, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

This is the evolution of last week’s house that was white. And now its, beige with green trim and a brick top. Brick top, that guy was a sweet actor, what movie was that? Ah, Snatch that was the movie. Anyway, are they going to paint the third level? It sort of looks like a compound now, with the fence off to the side. If you go to the open house I suggest you don’t drink the Kool-Aid…

  • maybe it’s just the angle of the picture, but it looks crooked.
I hate that thing. And it’s been over 2 years in the making.

  • Sveiks

Do you know what nemesis means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by a horrible ****, me.

  • this building certainly qualifies. PoP, next time, get a picture from around back from the south, through the alley. Want to see if they did anything to “beautify” the rear of the building instead of the unfinsihed cinder blocks that were there orignally.

  • Jamie

Despite my loathing of the 3-story bump up in general, the fact that they used brick on top (instead of the typical aluminum siding) and also maintained the traditional window styling is a good thing and quite shocking, because it’s got to be a lot more expensive. I can’t believe that they would go to all that trouble unless they intend to paint it (or blast the bottom) so it matches.

So anyway, in the scale of these jobs (from “blindness-inducing” to “merely atrocious”) I think it’s at the better end of things.. or at least seems likely to end up that way.

  • TheNeighbor

Ewwww….and it looks like it is going to be 4 rental/condos.
    Is that true?

  • How sad is it that we even have to say, “well this isn’t as bad as the one across the street”?

  • Otis Gal

Thanks for all the attention to our little ugly corner! I’ll just be happy when the whole construction mess is completed.

  • isaac

I’m sure that the owner/builder didn’t just wake up on day and say, ‘Hey, let’s make that condo rennovation we’re doing look like total crap.’ But it certainly feels that way. Isn’t there something we could do, as a neighborhood, to help people see that this looks terrible? I’d like to be able to catch these before they get started and say, ‘Um, no offense, but this is really ugly. There’s dozens, if not more, of great examples of how to expand a row house all over town, and I’ll bet you could do something that looks great and is still affordable without looking like s@#t’ Hey PoP — maybe you could have a set of photos that shows the ‘good, the bad, and the ugly,’ and we can all vote and make comments, and then email to EVERY developer in the world.

Au contraire, mon frere (comment for Jamie). Don’t you think a 3rd story addition or rear bump-out allows people to stay in the community even when their family (or budget) expands?

  • Kevin

Are they building it with Legos?

  • oden

bogfrog: The four electric meters in the picture show that this isn’t a house for the Brady Bunch but rather some speculator’s 4 unit condo-strosity. Almost all of these awful extra level additions are for crappy condo conversions. It’s all about $$$ and taste isn’t a consideration. After all, the developer is going to sell these four units to the biggest suckers he or she can find and never look back — what do they care about the visual pollution they leave in their wake?

  • Kevin

    Bogfrog-
So this family has decided to spend some of this surplus money from their newly expanded budget on personal electric meters for their new family members?? Interesting. Who woulda thunk?

Those were great replies — I’m LOL.
Despite the risk of creating visual horrors, I still maintain that a 3rd story addition or rear bump-out allows people to stay in the community when their family or budget grows. Property ownership includes the air rights unless there are other zoning issues which supersede these.
Did I ever state that this particular 3rd story addition as pictured will allow a family to stay in the community? No. But this particular house is not the only house in Petworth/CH.

we have GOT to get some housing codes against this kind of shit. seriously.
