Despite my loathing of the 3-story bump up in general, the fact that they used brick on top (instead of the typical aluminum siding) and also maintained the traditional window styling is a good thing and quite shocking, because it’s got to be a lot more expensive. I can’t believe that they would go to all that trouble unless they intend to paint it (or blast the bottom) so it matches.

So anyway, in the scale of these jobs (from “blindness-inducing” to “merely atrocious”) I think it’s at the better end of things.. or at least seems likely to end up that way.

How sad is it that we even have to say, “well this isn’t as bad as the one across the street”?

I’m sure that the owner/builder didn’t just wake up on day and say, ‘Hey, let’s make that condo rennovation we’re doing look like total crap.’ But it certainly feels that way. Isn’t there something we could do, as a neighborhood, to help people see that this looks terrible? I’d like to be able to catch these before they get started and say, ‘Um, no offense, but this is really ugly. There’s dozens, if not more, of great examples of how to expand a row house all over town, and I’ll bet you could do something that looks great and is still affordable without looking like s@#t’ Hey PoP — maybe you could have a set of photos that shows the ‘good, the bad, and the ugly,’ and we can all vote and make comments, and then email to EVERY developer in the world.
