Holy Cow: I Found A Good Sports Bar

IMG_6300, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Ever since Mr. Days went out of business in downtown DC I’ve been looking for a good sports bar. I have finally found one in Momo’s Cafe Nema at 1334 U St. NW. Momos opened about two months ago. While it certainly a bit more upscale than Mr. Days was it has a nice layout and obviously the location is great. It has tons of flat screens tvs throughout so you can’t have a bad seat. And for soccer fans on Sat. and Sun. mornings they will be showing plenty of games including the upcoming Africa’s Cup. Additionally the grub looks good and is reasonably priced. Burgers go for $6.99, Nachos $6.99, BBQ Wings 10/$6.99 20/$11.99 and lots more choices. On Friday and Sat. nights there will usually be a DJ spinning. For me, I think this place will be perfect to catch a game on Sat. afternoons and of course I’m always happy to discover a good sports bar that appreciates soccer. Anyone check it out yet? More pictures after the jump. (more…)

Is this Che?

This is outside a house on 11th St. I’ve never seen a blue Che before. Think about the political significance of that… Wait shouldn’t Che have a star on the beret, who is this?

Special Monday Question of the Day

Hopefully it is not too late but a reader writes:  “Those of us who get the Washington Post delivered to our door probably got an envelope that said “If you would like to remember your carrier during the holidays, please use this envelope”.  I’m sending a $25 check to my delivery person, since my paper has been in place, on time, every morning of the week for the past year, but just wondering what other folks do/think on this subject.”

So how much do you tip the newspaper delivery person?  Who else do you tip?

Help Some Folks Compile Social Service Locations in Columbia Heights/Park View/Petworth

“We are trying to compile a list of all the social services, group homes, free clinics, and subsidized housing in the Columbia Heights/Park View/ Petworth area into a map. Such a list does not currently exist, so we need the help of all of our neighbors. We ask that they either post a comment or email Cliff Valenti (cliffvalenti@hotmail.com) or Terra Weirich (terraweirich@hotmail.com) the name, address and function of anything that this map is missing. All entries will be further validated by DCRA so we can be sure the map is complete and accurate.”

Friday Question of the Day

Today’s question of the day was submitted by Reuben.  He asks:  “dc gets its own quarter (like the other, real states)… which image or person examplifies dc? barry? a double parked car? chili dog? a spent casing from a tech 9?  an empty styrofoam container from a corner carryout?”  While a bit cynical I think it is an interesting question.  What do you guys think would best represent DC on the back of a quarter?

Sweet Porch Couch

I can’t believe these people have this couch on their porch. This is a beauty that would gladly be proudly displayed in my living room. They must have an even sicker couch inside…

An Unpleasant Walk Home at 1:32 AM

I don’t even really know how to start this encounter. Perhaps I didn’t make the wisest decision walking home from Wonderland at 1:32 in the morning. At any rate I had made it most of the way home until I was just a few short blocks from home. I see a guy urinating on a tree. I’m not happy but whatever it is late and I just want to get home. Well, as he finishes up he waves to the car he is near and three guys step out. At this point I am just approaching him and I start to get a little nervous. He looks me in the eye and says “how you doin’ man?” (He is Latino and it was heavily accented. This comment will make sense in a little bit.) I respond I’m alright. Now let me just add an aside here. I think I have perfected the late night walk. I don’t walk too fast and I don’t walk too slow. I don’t keep my head down but I don’t stare people in the face either. I try and portray a fairly confident fellow. Ok, back to the story. After I respond that I am fine he says “alright, man. White power!”. Now, I am not drunk at this point but I was a little buzzed. After he said White Power, every single hair on body stood on end. Holy shit, I’m thinking, White power, what the hell does that mean? Why would anyone say that? And why would a Latino person say that? So I take a few more steps hoping that I don’t get my skull smashed open in a few seconds. I can feel them all right behind me. So like Carl Lewis in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics I sprint like no mere mortal has sprinted before. I mean I was flying. I’m a pretty fast guy anyway but I think this display would have impressed most Big Ten coaches. I can only conclude that it so startled them that they didn’t have the time to decide to chase me down. I sprinted about four blocks before I turned around and thankfully didn’t see them. I made it home, poured myself a shot of Powers Irish whiskey and thanked my lucky stars. So please someone explain this encounter to me. Why did the guy say white power to me? Secondly, how come they didn’t chase me down? Am I totally overreacting?

Do You Think These Lots Will Eventually All Be Built On?

IMG_6289, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I wonder with the way the real estate market is going if we will continue to see major construction of new condos in DC? We’ve all heard about the glut and all. Yet it still seems like many projects from large scale to smaller scale are still on going. Obviously if they’ve been in the works a while they will continue and perhaps be converted to rentals as we have seen. But I wonder about lots like the one pictured above. Are people still going to build here or wait a few years until the market gets its legs back?
