The Saloon Makes a Plea to the City

The sign says: “To Whom It May Concern.  For property taxes we pay, we would like to receive some services.*”

*The definition of services can be mutually agreed.

I love the Saloon, and not just because the menu is always fun to read, even if you’ve read it 100 times.

We used to live just down the street from the Saloon (that is, before moving to Petworth this year). At that time, the sign in the front window was basically a plea to the neiborhood, stating how they had been robbed twice in recent weeks and how difficult it was to be a small, neighborhood business in that atmosphere.

Glad to see that times have changed and that they can move on towards slaying the next dragon.

(P.S.–Echo Markus’ sentiments… love the Saloon (even in spite of their prices).)

    ahem, “neighborhood”

They have GREAT burgers there too.

I was thinking about this the other day – I have been going to the Saloon since ~ 1988 – back when it was in Georgetown, and the drinking age in DC was not yet 21. It’s my favorite place in the world.

This is the second time I’ve seen them put up a sign like this. The last one, perhaps 2 years ago, said something to the effect of
“Dear DC Police Department – We have been robbed several times recently and would appreciate some help.”

I hope this sort of thing doesn’t persuade Kami to fold up and move elsewhere in the city…again. In addition to being the coolest bar (I love that there’s no TV), Kami does a wonderful service to the planet. He’ll close the bar for a month twice a year and travel to another part of the planet to build houses and schools. The names you see painted everywhere inside and out are donors who’ve contributed to that cause.

I just wish there was some way of knowing when he was off on an adventure and the place was closed. You know, before we spent $14 on cab fare to be taken there
