Columbia Heights to Get A Sushi Restaurant!

This is fantastic news. A great addition to the restaurant scene. So has anyone been to the Sake Club in Woodley Park? Please tell me it is good sushi. Now we just need a good Greek place to open up…

From the press release: Donatelli Development announced today that an agreement has been reached with the owners of Sake Club, a popular sushi and sake restaurant located on Connecticut Avenue in Woodley Park, to build a new restaurant in the retail portion of Highland Park, bringing to six the number of restaurants expected to open in the building.

The new Sake Club restaurant will be 1,800 square feet, facing Irving Street near the western end of the Highland Park development, about half way between 14th and 15th streets. The owners expect to build a restaurant with a similar look and feel to the one in Woodley Park, which will complement the other restaurant offerings in the building:

- A fine-dining restaurant in the British “gastropub” style, with an eclectic but accessible and affordable menu, from Hank’s Oyster Bar founder Jamie Leeds;

- Five Guys Burgers and Fries, started in 1986 just a few miles away in Arlington, since expanded into a franchise operation covering 16 states and the District of Columbia;

- Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza, featuring fresh pizza, pastas, panini, soups, antipasto, salads and gelato, as well as a selection of domestic and Italian wines and beer;

- Potbelly Sandwich Works, offering sandwiches made to order, salads, soups, smoothies and various sweets; and

- Zinnia, a locally owned sit-down restaurant serving an exotic menu of Caribbean foods and drinks, tapas-style, in a comfortable lounge environment.

What I truly love most about this doorway is the sculpture on the left. Take a look at a close up after the jump, it has the most expressive face. (more…)

Nice Use Of Slate in a Walkway

This walkway simply rocks. So let me ask, what types of houses work with walkways like this? I’m guessing my sweet vinyl siding may not work so well with a walkway like this, unfortunately…

Another Nice Addition to a Row House

I’m a huge fan of the cedar siding. That’s cedar right? Makes me feel like I’m in the Berkshires rather than the heart of Washington, DC.

Logan Circle Statue

You know, I’ve never really taken the time to admire this statue before. But if you walk up close to it you can really see how fresh it is. I normally just see the horse when I walk by but up close you can see there are interesting friezes all the way around on the base of the statue. But again, forgive my laziness, who the hell was Logan anyway?

Not Quite A Porch…

IMG_6635, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

but given the fact that there is no porch this seems like a pretty cool way to cover the doorway. It’s kind of got a modern flavor to it that I actually think works quite nicely in contrast to the old school row house. Do you like this touch?

Lawn Sculpture of the Day

It wasn’t really the sculpture itself that I was so taken with but I love the fact that it is based on an old tree stump. Now that I look at again, yeah, even the sculpture is pretty cool too.

Special Guest Post: An Interesting Scenario/Question is Posed By A Reader

So here’s one for the “if the music is too loud, you’re too old” category:
I went to see a show at Rock and Roll Hotel…braving the late start (didn’t get in line until after 10:30), late night…as sad as that is to admit…but it was a Friday and it seemed about time.

So, once inside it was time to grab a couple of beers and settle in for the show. Over the course of the evening a few things stick out as unnecessarily annoying. And so, as I sit here post-concert unwinding with a tall glass of scotch and replaying the evening in my head, I thought I’d seek some insight and understanding on a few things.

Most importantly, overall, the night worked out well for a last-minute, live music fix. Rock and Roll Hotel is an awesome small venue and the band was downright enjoyable with a good sound. However, there were a few annoying encounters with other concert-goers that were just downright rude, and pointlessly so. And as I ponder it, I have to wonder whether there’s been a loss common decency in our interactions with others, am I getting too old and thus too sensitive to this or was it just an anomaly, a couple of off-moments in an otherwise good show? [Story continues after the jump] (more…)

What the Hell is an Oriental Deli?

So what’s the deal here, do you get a pastrami sandwich with an eggroll on the side instead of a pickle? Anyway, I thought Oriental wasn’t the preferred nomenclature anymore…

Just Totally Unacceptable

IMG_6656, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

When I first wrote about this goofy orange sign a few months back, very few commenters felt as outraged as I did. But now look at it. It is ridiculous. And why do I bring up this horrid orange sign again? Look in the background. They have now added a huge Banner sign. You can see a better picture after the jump. This must be over the line, no? Can anyone just string up huge signs over their porches? I’m not looking to live under a Totalitarian regime but we must have some rules. First it is small orange signs on the lawn, then it is huge ugly banners across the porch and quickly thereafter it is freaking anarchy. I don’t want to live under anarchy.  I guess you could flip that argument in the other direction but never mind.  So is anyone else outraged by this? Maybe outraged is a little too strong, is anyone else mildly upset by this? (more…)

Forget the Lions, Pineapples, Snowmen, etc

IMG_6543, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

These are the funniest objects I’ve seen framing a doorway. Knights! For real, knights. Ah, that is too good. I’d love to have heard that conversation when this decision was made, I imagine it went something like this:

Husband: Honey, you have to trust me on this one.

Wife: You’re kidding right?

Husband: You’re not listening to me. We’ll have two knights and they’ll be in full body armor…

Wife: You’re kidding right?

Husband: And they’ll have swords….

Wife: I thought I knew you!

In fact, I can’t even imagine or make up any more dialog for how that conversation was resolved. So I’ll just stop here.
