Walking through the park is indeed safe. My wife and I have been doing it for 2.5 years now. We do avoid it late at night. According to the MPD GIS page, most of the crimes occuring in the apartment area on Ft Totten Drive occur between midnight and 3 am. There are plenty of Cabs the the station late, so that worry is eliminated!
