I had heard a lot of good stories about how awesome Big Bear is. And it is pretty damn awesome. If you live right near there you are indeed very lucky. It’s got great big windows and free wireless and nice food choices. I was excited to try the prosciutto and gruyere croissant but unfortunately they had run out. But I did have a very nice cucumber and hummous sandwich. Now, believe me, I wish Petworth had a Big Bear of its own. But in the meantime I think Columbia Heights Coffee is poised to take this mantle. Columbia Heights Coffee has it all as well, except it’s a little too small. So I hope with their upcoming expansion they will offer the same roomy atmosphere as Big Bear. After the jump see a photo of posters for a knitting club and book club held at Big Bear.

Ha! Never. Just exploring…
Speaking of the knitting circle poster, my wife is a big knitter. Are there any knitting groups that meet at Mayorga, Columbia Heights Coffee, etc?
its the best coffee shop in the city.
I’ve been meaning to check out that knitting group! Mr. T, is your wife on Ravelry? The site has a DC knitters group (with 842 members!) that could better answer that question. Maybe she could use it as a springboard to get a new knitting group started– we recently started a knitting meetup in Dupont Circle and it’s had good attendance so far.
Yes, she is on Ravelry, I think, she may be “knit and run” (she’s also a runner) or something like that. I’ll suggest posting something there. Thanks!
I would like to knit with Mrs T and engineergirl at CHCoffee or nearby. When?
I would faint from happiness if they opened a Little Bear or Bigger Bear on GA Ave!
I’m Mrs. T, or jerdlngr on Ravelry. Sounds like we need to have a knitting group in Columbia Heights, then. I vote for Mayorga, since there’s more space (the upstairs area?) There’s a DC group as well as a DC/VA/MD group on Ravelry- I’ll post a message there and see if there’s any more interest (so, check there). Yay…
when/where is columbia heights coffee expanding to?
There are a whole bunch of knitting groups around the city (and outside).
Knitting/crochet meetings that i know of:
- Tuesdays 6-8pm at the Saloon on U st
- Thursdays 8-10pm at someone’s house somewhere in the city (check the listserv below for locations)
- Sundays 4-6pm at Teaism in penn quarter
Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/snb_dc/ for more local info. I know that a number of the members live in the area (myself included) and would be interested in a nearby meeting.
All of the above groups are open to anyone and welcome new members of any skill level. There’s also a men’s knitting group that has just switched to meeting on the first thursday of the month at ACKC (14th and Q NW). There are a ton more (two in dupont, one in eastern market, one in takoma/sliver springs, one in alexandria, one in a downtown goth-ish club before the show) and probably even more that I don’t know about.
But, if you’re on ravelry, you probably know all this already…
