Special PoP Feature: Intangible Tales Vol. 3

March 31st, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Uncategorized | 2 Comments »

The great Intangible Arts is back for volume 3 of his intangible tales. If you missed the previous entries check out Vol. 1 here and Vol 2 here. Volume 3 explores the city through the eyes of one on crutches.

GIMPIN’ AINT EASY
(with apologies to Ice-T)

“Don’t never…..but never….. make fun of no cripples.”

That was the line that made the 1968 Monkees movie “Head” one of the strangest things put to film. Very little of it made sense. But the first time I saw Timothy Carey’s character (Lord High ‘n Low) stagger across the screen, drooling and mumbling like a mutant towards Mike Nesmith and the Monkees as they burst into laughter, and then he delivers that line….. it became etched in my brain as THE BEST moment in film history! YES!

But recently, I’ve had a new reason to remember that scene:

My wife experienced a random accident at the Adams Morgan dog park a few months ago. A couple of dogs were running around, naturally. They weren’t watching where they were going and neither were we. Suddenly the two mutts ran into the side of her right leg, just so. It was a one in a million hit, which caused the bottom of her thighbone to crush the tibial plateau, creating a split in the tibia and a fracture within the base of the knee-joint.

She didn’t need surgery, just several weeks in an immobilizing brace and walking with crutches. Neither of us have broken anything before, so this is all new territory. And by the way, dog owners: Pay attention at the parks. Seriously. The next break could be your own.

I’ve written previously about how the dog changed my perception of the neighborhood: It caused me to look down, for example, and to notice dangerous litter. I was re-discovering my neighborhood through a new set of eyes.

Now, we’re doing it again, but from the point of view of an “access-challenged” person. We both love to walk, and the crutches have changed everything. Even the simple pleasures of our neighborhood aren’t so simple anymore. Intangible Tales continues after the jump. Read Full Post

I’m not sure if the picture does it justice but these numbers are gigantic. The two is also a bit odd but all in all nice work here.

Toke or “Toke”. Any ideas for the rationale behind the quotes?

My Favorite City Church

I once posted a photo of this church on 13th Street back in the day but that was when I was using the camera phone so I wanted to capture it in its proper glory. Seriously pretty sweet, yeah? And this is coming from a non believer. There’s just something very old world European about it to me.

Republic Gardens Reopening on U Street?

March 31st, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Uncategorized | 19 Comments »

A reader writes: “I know you don’t like to get political :) but I thought maybe you would want to let your readers know they can participate in the ANC1B meeting next Thursday if they have any concerns about the reopening of Republic Gardens. The meeting is April 3rd at the True Reformer Building (12th & U) at 7:00PM.”

I never knew people had a beef with the Republic Gardens, what’s the story there? Why was it closed down in the first place?

Best Sign in Columbia Heights?

A reader writes:  “I wanted to draw your lens to one that I am sure you’ve seen and thought about. It may be simultaneously the best and the worst sign in Columbia Heights and Petworth taken together. Yes, I’m talking about the Tivoli sign.

On the up side – it’s historic, it’s a landmark, there are two of them, it evokes a 19th century Danish garden …

On the down side – no one seems to be in charge of replacing the burnt out light bulbs.”

So have you noticed many light bulbs that need replacing?  Otherwise do you dig this sign the most?

Possible Strike At Safeway and Giant?

March 30th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Uncategorized | 37 Comments »

A reader writes:  “I just wanted to give you and the PoP readers a heads up on something that could really affect everyone’s quality of life. From what I’ve been hearing, it’s possible that workers at the Safeway and Giant could go on strike next week.  The supermarkets seem to be demanding major concessions, especially on wages, that the union doesn’t want to give in to.  Which seems pretty understandable–the workers at these stores should be making decent wages.  I think it’s important to support the workers and not cross the picket line, but it’s also going to be hard to get groceries easily (I live right next to the Safeway).  What do you think?”

I was brought up to follow two rules very strictly.  First, never name names and second, never cross picket lines.  So thanks to the new Target (doesn’t it have a grocery section?), it’s really not that inconvenient to not cross the picket lines either.  So I don’t know enough about this possible strike but I generally give the benefit of the doubt to the strikers.  But that’s just me.  So what do you guys think?  Would you cross a picket line?

More Fun With Facades

March 30th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Uncategorized | 5 Comments »

Thanks again to another reader for alerting me to this wild home. The reader described it as: “The facade of the house, including porch, is standing, but there is literally nothing behind it. It’s like a wild west set.” So I could understand keeping some bigger building facades but what’s the rationale for keeping this standard looking house’s facade? Check out some different angles after the jump.

What’s The Story With The Freaky Clown?

March 30th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Uncategorized | 6 Comments »

A reader would desperately like to get to the bottom of the evil looking clown on the side of the old Common Share behind El Tamarindo in Adams Morgan. Sorry my camera doesn’t have a better zoom but you can kind of see it. And props to the reader for noticing it. I was too close to the building when I was looking for it at first and I’m fairly certain I looked like a lunatic trying to find it as I was walking around the building weaving in and out of the street. Anyway, when you are across the street you can see it pretty clearly. So who’s got the scoop is it a remnant from the Common Share?
