I didn’t but as I was walking past Tubman Elementary school on 13th Street in Columbia Heights I saw tons of folks working on beautification projects. They were planting gardens, cleaning up and painting murals. It was a great sight to see, that’s for sure. Check out another mural in action after the jump.

The folks in red were volunteers from Exxon Mobil. But there were also many students participating in the beautification projects. Props to all who participated.

Yup, I participated at Bunker Hill elem school — also helped out at Brookland Elem School for a while before I realized I was at the wrong school. There were a lot of high school kids from College Bound participating. The school principal spoke about how our schools are only as strong as the communities they’re in –

Yes, it was the 20th annual GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY, and it took place here in DC and 101 countries around the world. More than 4 million young people, ages 5-25, participated.

Youth Service America organizes the event in the U.S. and around the world. SERVE-DC in the Mayor’s office organizes local activities in Washington, DC.

Youth are not “future” leaders or the “hope of tomorrow”; they are very much the hope of today. We cannot afford for them to grow up before they start changing the world.
