Cool New Building

I really like the metal roof and windows. It looks like it might be an art studio. It is located on Otis Place near 11th I think. Anyone know what this building is/will be?

Neat Neighborhood Find: iHip Hop

I’ve always admired the sign on this shop located at 3223 Georgia Ave. It has been open for four years and features, you guessed it, hip hop cds and also old school go-go. Some of the go-go greats you can find here include EU, Backyard, Rare Essence and lots more. When I checked out the store I was psyched to hear the sounds of some old school Tribe Called Quest – I forget just how good those guys were. Anyway, I hope this cool store manages to survive given the fact that the music industry seems to be switching to MP3s and such. Check out a photo of the interior after the jump. Read Full Post

Mural of the Day

I couldn’t possibly pick murals of the day without ever including this beauty. Of course with its beauty it may carry a particular curse because I seem to recall the restaurant underneath seems to close every few years.  Still pretty cool how it takes up practically the whole building, yeah?

Some Cool Exhibits Going into the Carnegie Library

May 30th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Architecture, Buildings | 16 Comments »

DSCN0120

This building located just south of the new convention center is architecturally freaking awesome. I seem to recall that there was supposed to be a DC museum or something like that but it didn’t end up working out. Of course there is a banner that says welcome to the Historical Society of Washington, DC, so I’m pretty confused. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? Weren’t there some money problems and it closed after 6 months or so? Anyway, I was overjoyed to see these gigantic banners advertising two new exhibits going on inside.  Specific exhibits after the jump. Read Full Post

Friday Question of the Day

May 30th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Crime, Crime - Stories, Friday Question of the Day | 15 Comments »

How much information is too much information? I get emails quite frequently asking me if I think a particular street or neighborhood is safe or not. I find these questions by far the most difficult to answer. We’ve certainly discussed the issue of crime before and every time I read the comments I shudder. I think to myself I can’t imagine what folks who haven’t been to this neighborhood/street must be thinking. Personally when I moved to my home I had absolutely no idea what the neighborhood was going to be like. I basically spoke to a buddy who lived near by, really liked the house itself and just dove right in. I can’t imagine what I would’ve thought had I read some of the comments on this blog and other neighborhood blogs and/or listservs. I don’t say this as a criticism of the comments but I think if you just read the comments you are doing yourself a disservice in concluding whether a neighborhood is “safe” or not. Shaw, Columbia Heights, Petworth, Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleasant are huge neighborhoods. Are they Cleveland Park? Of course not. But nor are they Beirut circa 1984. So for the Friday question of the day: Can neighborhood blog posts and comments accurately portray whether or not a neighborhood is “safe”? Do they provide too much information in a vacuum or do you think the more information the better?

Creative Vegetable Garden

I’m starting to see lots of interesting tree boxes but I was surprised to find one with a vegetable garden. I think it’s pretty cool but I hope to hell they wash the lettuce with bleach or something because dogs do love those tree boxes too, right?

Cool Features From Old Rowhouses

May 29th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Renovation | 1 Comment »

I was able to take this photo from an old rowhouse in Columbia Heights. This is in the kitchen of a reader’s home who is doing a renovation (final photos coming upon completion). This is a pretty cool gigantic wood cabinet that was built into the wall that the owner managed to salvage. Check out another cool feature after the jump.

It’s time to play what was I thinking when I took this photo. This is the game where I’m looking through my photo archives and can’t exactly remember why I took this particular photo. Previous photo archive post can be found here. Any ideas what I was thinking?

A Proper Dessert

On Columbia Road you can get an old school ice where they pour the flavoring right over the ice. Raspberry is of course the best flavor.

Cool or not?

I think this yard is a bit too small to support such a large decoration. Of course if you lived next door it would be easy to give directions to your house…

What do you think cool or an eyesore?
