I got all depressed over the street harassment and the schools post so I thought it was time for a lighter question of the day. The post about the death of the cassette tape got me thinking. What was the first cassette I ever owned? Then I thought what was the first cd I’ve ever owned? And finally I thought about the first concert I ever went to. And I’m dying to know your answers.

So first cassette I owned – Michael Jackson’s Thriller
First cd I owned was U2 Joshua Tree
First concert I ever went to was Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet Tour – 1986. Oh yeah!

So what was the first cassette, cd and concert you owned/went to?

If you aren’t a dog person, you simply aren’t going to get it.

It’s one of those things that when you mention it to non-believers, you find yourself offering all kinds of explanations and caveats.

Doggie day care.

Now, when I was a kid, our dogs were pretty low maintenance–or at least that’s the way I remember it. Unless something was hanging out of an orifice or the animal was bleeding (profusely, at that), the family dog seemed to get along just fine without fussing over it too much. Then again, I also have memories of being a young child sitting in the front seat of my parents’ car with them smoking, with the windows rolled up, and none of us wearing seat belts–so we probably aren’t the best model to use.

Before we got our French bulldog, Lolly, I openly scoffed at doggie day care, thinking it was for all the crazy dog people who anthropomorphize their pets into “fuzzy children.” Then one day–I think it was shortly after the puppy decided to chew on a wall for entertainment–we decided to give it a try.

Once you see a dog coming home from a day at doggie day care, you become a convert (we take Lolly about once a week for a full-day). It’s like they’ve been to a spa. They are relaxed and calm. It’s obvious they’ve spent the day working stuff out that a walk around the block or a quick butt-sniffing with the neighbor dog can’t accomplish.

We moved to Petworth from Rockville about two months after we discovered doggie day care and were really worried about where we’d take Lolly. Then I saw a brief mention in a PoP posting by Intangible Arts about Little Rascals, a new dog day care and indoor dog park at 5917 Georgia Avenue. Story continues after the jump. (more…)

It was pretty timely having the discussion yesterday about our favorite Mexican/Latino Restaurants. I’m super happy to hear this news. And who doesn’t love a mariachi band?

Wicked cool all around.

This one’s located at 11th and Florida. I liked it because I just read an article in the New York Times about the death of the cassette. I consider this fire box a memorial of sorts.  The article starts:

“There was a funeral the other day in the Midtown offices of Hachette, the book publisher, to mourn the passing of what it called a “dear friend.” Nobody had actually died, except for a piece of technology, the cassette tape.”

I thought this was an interesting renovation/extension because at least they kept a porch area. Nevertheless, what do you think of bump outs to the front of rowhouses?

We’ve discussed this question in the past but I thought it would be interesting to get some poll numbers on the subject.

Lauriol Plaza always seems to be packed yet I’ve never met anyone who actually likes the food. I’ve gone on record as loving El Limeno at 2nd and Upshur in Petworth. So what’s your favorite Latino restaurant? Leave cross street if you know them.
