We just ate there tonight and the service was lightning speed. The co-owner Vivian (Jay’s wife) told me that they had a surge of clients Thursday night and last night and their single sushi chef with the assistant could not keep up. So they hired a second chef and what a difference. Everything was coming out like clock work. AND the food was great. We’re definitely returning. I consider myself a sushi snob and although its not Sushi-ko, it still is a great sushi option for the area. I’m so thrilled it’s here. The beer was excellent and fresh also.

Just finished a lunchtime outing there… the service is still remarkably slow, despite being the only table there. We then had to split the bill onto a few credit cards and the server couldn’t charge the amounts we specified, she had to add tax to them… what?

Conclusion, won’t be eating there again, but might call ahead.

I had dinner at Nori tonight. It’s no secret that I really want this place to succeed. I love the location, the bar upstairs is beautiful, and I really like the owners. That said, I take my sushi seriously, so I went in without the highest of hopes.
I was really surprised at how good my dinner was! I had a few appetizers as well as sushi, and I loved every bite. The sushi tasted fresh, rolls were made well, shumai was delicious. I had been really nervous that this last effort wouldn’t blow me away. I am so happy that it did. At that price, I will be eating there regularly.
I know I sound like a commercial, but I truly have no vested interest, other than an affordable Asian restaurant nearby that is actually really good. The service was great, the decor completely changed. I have even higher hopes for this spot now.

Anymouse: I am fully aware of the idea of sunk costs–you’re preaching to the choir here, dude. I am just relating what I have been told by another business owner who knows these guys well. I’m not saying it makes sense. Thanks for the hand slap.

That doesn’t make sense. Ever hear of the sunk cost fallacy? You don’t throw good money after bad. The very fact that they are taking another shot at it means they feel there is a chance for this to succeed.

But whatever. I too hope them the best. I’ll be at the Derby and at Commonwealth.

I took a peek inside and grabbed a menu. Looks really nice, and well priced. Can’t wait to try the sushi.
On another note, I’ve read so many negative statements about this spot, people saying it’s cursed, or they are done trying it out. The way I look at it is, the owners have really made a solid effort to invest in this spot. When Mayorga didn’t work out, I assume they could have packed their bags and sold the spot for a pretty penny, probably to yet another bank. So as long as they put a solid chunk of change into a local investment, I’ll continue to give them a chance.
And the bar is apparently still open upstairs. I still think it’s the nicest bar in the neighborhood.
