The.Big.Lebowski.1998., originally uploaded by zwollo.
Since last Friday’s favorite book FQOTD was so popular I feel obliged to ask the natural follow up. This post will be invaluable to me as I’m about to set up a netflix account for the very first time. So the Friday Question of the Day is: What is your all time favorite movie. (Please limit your responses to three).
Mine are (in no particular order) Cool Hand Luke, Empire of the Sun, Big Lebowski.
Your turn.

Goodfellas.
Carandiru
Bladerunner. Wings of Desire. Labyrinth.
i hate anyone who like the big lebowski. the pure idiocy (bordering severe handicap) of goodman and bridges in that movie make me want beat them with my shoe.
Anonymous at 6:59: you’re out of your element. I’ll go with Lebowski, Miller’s Crossing, Life is Beautiful (although excluding Dr. Strangelove, Goodfellas, Shawshank hurts).
Oh, and anonymous at 4:14, can you explain the Bladerunner hype to me? I finally saw it and while visually cool, it was nearly impossible to stay awake I thought … nothing really happens. As for Labyrinth, Bowie in that film gave countless kids nightmares …
I’d say The Goonies, Everything is Illuminated and Almost Famous. Love a ton of others too…
As a side note, John Goodman in Big Lebowski looks strikingly like my father. Outfits and all.
Dog Day Afternoon, Chinatown, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Coal Miner’s Daughter, When Harry met Sally and Body Double
Shawshank Redemption
Gone With The Wind
Overboard (yeah, it’s so bad it’s good)
the color purple, bram stokers dracula, mean girls/enchanted (its a tie for 3rd)
DONT JUDGE ME!
Serenity, The Big Liebowski, Donnie Darko
Rear Window
Casablanca
The Philadelphia Story
The Departed. Last of the Mohicans. Empire of the Sun.
Apocalypse Now (I’m usually a total girl about violence and scariness, but I just can’t get over how visually stunning this one is), The Rules of the Game, and anything with June Allyson in it (and until you’ve seen the tripe that is “Good News”, you won’t understand the depth of my love)
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Life As a House
Princess Bride
Urban Cowboy- huge crush on John Travolta as a kid.
I love all the Lampoon’s vacation movies except Vegas.
Amelie
The Limey, The Big Lebowski, Vertigo
Lebowski, Empire Strikes Back, Goodfellas
Fight Club
Time Bandits
Hollywood Shuffle
The Women (1939 Geo. Cokur version, don’t bother with the remake now in theaters)
Beautiful Thing
Pleasantville
The Blues Brothers.
Caddyshack, Boogie Nights, North By Northwest
but this list is ever changing…i think it depends on mood
Shawshank
Airplane!
Hudson Hawk
Surely you don’t actually like Hudson Hawk?
The Ice Storm
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
Flight of the Navigator, Dancer in the Dark, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Life Aquatic, Caveman, Starwars Trilogy (Original)
oh gosh this is hard! People have already listed some really great ones that are def on my list of favorites. I guess I’ll list some that haven’t been yet that I love
Beautiful Boxer
Darjeeling Limited
Water
Kalia, if you mean Mehta’s water, have you seen Fire?? It was very intense.
The Shawshank Redemption
Royal Tenenbaums
Back to the Future
Lau, Yes I own the trilogy but I have yet to watch Earth. I did enjoy Fire but I thought Water was more visually pleasing. (and I totally agree apoclypse now is an awesome movie!)
The Verdict (Paul Newman with a David Mamet script!)
Big Lebowski (the landlord’s dance cycle seals this one)
The Warriors (if only Petworth was more like the big C.I….)
Apocalypse Now!!!
not the movie. Just whats happening
Sex Lies and Videotape
Shawshank Redemption
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Deep Throat II, My Oriental Babysitter, and Goodfellatios
Casablanca, Apocalypse Now, Unforgiven
Dawn of the Dead (both original & remake)
Hot Fuzz! (I love Simon Pegg)
Out of Africa/Camille Claudel (tie)
In honor of Rocktober I’ll go with the music genre:
Festival Express
Walk the Line
Fantasia
I like classic mysteries/dramas like “Murder on the Orient Express” or “Whatever Happened to the PoP Coolest Roommate Contest?”
The Ice Storm
Fargo
Heat
Goodbye Lenin is a really excellent movie–add to your Netflix queues. It’s a foreign film and never reached as wide an audience as it should.
Nailed it on the Big Lebowski. I’ll raise a Wet Hot American Summer and an Office Space.
Stand by Me
Rushmore
Trainspotting
Say Anything
Cradle Will Rock
Better Off Dead
@tarantula – I caught that you wrote Goodfellatios – nice
I’m going to go with movies that always make me laugh-
Office Space
Best in Show-gets funnier everytime I see it
The Money Pit-wasn’t so funny the first time, but after I bought my first house I just kept thinking about that movie.
I’d also second Good Bye Lenon.
Ok – I get it now after re-reading tarantula’s favorite movies!
Full Metal Jacket
Rushmore
I (heart) Huckabees
I can’t believe the number of Shawshank Redemption and Apocalypse Now, though the former is in my top 15. I love Casablanca (cry whenever they sing La Marseillaise), Heat, with its many fabulous scenes and great actors galore and Europa, Europa, a true story Holocaust memoir.
comedy: Office Space, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, Legally Blonde
drama: Amelie, Volver, The Namesake
@Herb – lol, I was wondering about that too!
Rules of the Game
Ghostbusters
Svankmajer’s Alice
Valley Girl / Big Lebowski
The Thin Man
International House – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024183/
Bowie did not give me nightmares as a kid, I was too young to know about glam, and just thought Bowie was the most original guy ever, except for Jim Henson of course.
Of the movies I’ve seen, which needs to be kept in mind: To Kill a Mockingbird, Terms of Endearment, Young Frankenstein. (Seriously, why is no one mentioning Young Frankenstein??)
High Fidelity, The Royal Tenenbaums, Empire Records
And yeah, Goodbye Lenin is pretty cool.
Dirty Dancing – “Nobody puts Baby in a corner”
Fargo – “Oh for Pete’s sake, he’s fleeing the interview! He’s fleeing the interview!”
Grease – “Oh, bite the weeny, Riz” “With relish”
The Jerk
Welcome to the Dollhouse
The Departed
(I’m leaving off Lebowski since you already mentioned it).
Bowie never gave me nightmares, but he probably laid the framework for my crushes on androgynous men, which made the 80s all the more confusing.
Kalia’s right. This is hard. Otis PL would have loved the Film Noir section of our local video store when we were in San Francisco. I’m going for Fanny and Alexander, Blazing Saddles, and Cold Comfort Farm.
Aside from The Dollhouse, seems like we need some more with Parker Posey.
@David, someone did mention Best in Show-wasn’t she in that as well?
To go back to Pauper from this morning, I actually do like Hudson Hawk quite a bit. Yeah, I’m the one.
It’s not really in my top 3, but I wanted to give it some recognition.
My real #3 choice would probably be Bottle Rocket or Rushmore.
Let’s break this down. Top three are clearly Shawshank, Lebowski, and Goodfellas. Honorable mention to Eternal Sunshine (I love all four, although I can’t believe folks prefer E.S. to Being John Malkovich), Best in Show, and a few Wes Anderson films. Lots of John Cusack, Wes Anderson, and Martin Scorcese fans. Also fans of the 80′s comedy canon (Back to the Future and Ghostbusters). So what does this say about the demographics of much of your readership? We great up in the 80′s, came of age in the 90′s. We like films that are edgy / quirky, but not crazy pretentious art films. We prefer comedies, and prefer our comedies dry and/or offbeat and/or ironic. Basically your average bunch of moderately-hip-but-not-hipster, educated, reasonable affluent late 20′s / 30 something urban dwellers. No big shock …
Speaking of polls, are you just waiting for the election to arrive before the inevitable election poll? And will McCain get a SINGLE vote from any of your readers? I wonder …
C’mon, Markus…you’re better than that. You were supposed to say, “Yes I do like Hudson Hawk, and stop calling me Shirly.” Homage to Airplane!
Open wide, here it comes………..
SANTA SANGRE
FANTASTIC PLANET
BRAZIL
in order of preference.
and necessity.
in fact, there’s a head-twisting triple-feature right there.
bambi, tokyo gore police, and girls gone wild 3.
you gonna censor this too, Prince?
Did I censor the last one?
NEW2CH, sadly – my bf will probably vote for McCain. My job is to keep him from ever leaving the district for a place where his vote will matter.
Harold & Maude
Fargo
And I’ll claim ‘Being John Malkovich’
Ken Park
Boondock Saints
The Exorcist
‘The Exorcist’ is special for the local significance. Someday it’d be fun to chat about favorite DC film shots.
natural born killers
mirrormask
spirited away
City of Angels
Walk in the Clouds
Lake Placid
The Murder of Fred Hampton, Thoroughly Modern Millie and um, yeah, I’ll say it, Bring it On
Diner.
“Fenwick, will you just get out of the manger, pick up the wise men and put on your clothes?”
Shawshank Redemption
Office Space
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (original version w/Dom Delouise)
I also love some stupid flicks too:
Mrs. Doubtfire (when Robin Williams gets drunk and lobs fruit at Pierce Brosnan)
Idiocracy (“I got my law degree from Costco”)
Fatso (“have you ever sucked the jelly out of a donut?”) w/Dom Delouise
Rat Race
Re, Kalia, yep Parker was also in Best in Show, along with his other movies in the same genre.
Blade Runner
The Tin Drum
Au Revoir Les Enfants (today…#3 changes by the moment…it could also be Apocalypse Now, Godfather, Raging Bull, Das Boot, anything by Kurasawa…)
