Friday Question of the Day

The.Big.Lebowski.1998., originally uploaded by zwollo.
Since last Friday’s favorite book FQOTD was so popular I feel obliged to ask the natural follow up. This post will be invaluable to me as I’m about to set up a netflix account for the very first time. So the Friday Question of the Day is: What is your all time favorite movie. (Please limit your responses to three).
Mine are (in no particular order) Cool Hand Luke, Empire of the Sun, Big Lebowski.
Your turn.

i hate anyone who like the big lebowski. the pure idiocy (bordering severe handicap) of goodman and bridges in that movie make me want beat them with my shoe.

Anonymous at 6:59: you’re out of your element. I’ll go with Lebowski, Miller’s Crossing, Life is Beautiful (although excluding Dr. Strangelove, Goodfellas, Shawshank hurts).
03 October 2008 7:20 AM | New2CH Said:
Oh, and anonymous at 4:14, can you explain the Bladerunner hype to me? I finally saw it and while visually cool, it was nearly impossible to stay awake I thought … nothing really happens. As for Labyrinth, Bowie in that film gave countless kids nightmares …

I’d say The Goonies, Everything is Illuminated and Almost Famous. Love a ton of others too…
As a side note, John Goodman in Big Lebowski looks strikingly like my father. Outfits and all.

(I’m leaving off Lebowski since you already mentioned it).
Bowie never gave me nightmares, but he probably laid the framework for my crushes on androgynous men, which made the 80s all the more confusing.

Kalia’s right. This is hard. Otis PL would have loved the Film Noir section of our local video store when we were in San Francisco. I’m going for Fanny and Alexander, Blazing Saddles, and Cold Comfort Farm.
Aside from The Dollhouse, seems like we need some more with Parker Posey.

@David, someone did mention Best in Show-wasn’t she in that as well?
03 October 2008 3:04 PM | Markus Said:
To go back to Pauper from this morning, I actually do like Hudson Hawk quite a bit. Yeah, I’m the one.
It’s not really in my top 3, but I wanted to give it some recognition.
My real #3 choice would probably be Bottle Rocket or Rushmore.
03 October 2008 4:59 PM | New2CH Said:
Let’s break this down. Top three are clearly Shawshank, Lebowski, and Goodfellas. Honorable mention to Eternal Sunshine (I love all four, although I can’t believe folks prefer E.S. to Being John Malkovich), Best in Show, and a few Wes Anderson films. Lots of John Cusack, Wes Anderson, and Martin Scorcese fans. Also fans of the 80’s comedy canon (Back to the Future and Ghostbusters). So what does this say about the demographics of much of your readership? We great up in the 80’s, came of age in the 90’s. We like films that are edgy / quirky, but not crazy pretentious art films. We prefer comedies, and prefer our comedies dry and/or offbeat and/or ironic. Basically your average bunch of moderately-hip-but-not-hipster, educated, reasonable affluent late 20’s / 30 something urban dwellers. No big shock …
Speaking of polls, are you just waiting for the election to arrive before the inevitable election poll? And will McCain get a SINGLE vote from any of your readers? I wonder …
