Remind your elderly neighbors to collect their tax rebates! The number one zip code in DC for unclaimed payments is 20011 – Petworth, with almost 1500 total possible outstanding payment opportunities. The total amount unclaimed for this zip is $437,700.
From a reader:
“Remember those tax rebate checks we all were entitled to get earlier this year? A national non-profit organization (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities) has issued a report listing the number of unclaimed economic stimulus checks by State (and DC) and zip code. Out of curiousity, I looked it up. Interestingly, the number one zip code in DC for unclaimed payments is 20011 – Petworth, with almost 1500 total possible outstanding payment opportunities.. The total amount unclaimed for this zip is $437,700. The link for this is: http://www.cbpp.org/states/7-28-08stim-fact-dc.pdf
Many of those thought not to have filed are seniors, the disabled and disabled veterans. The deadline to claim the money is October 15, and the IRS commissioner is calling on folks to inquire with friends, family and neighbors to ensure that they have filed for the money they are entitled to. So, perhaps in the vein of today’s “looking out for your neighbor/fellow citizen” post, maybe you can urge readers to check with their neighbors, particularly the elderly, and make sure they have applied for this.”

Do these numbers mean thousands of people in DC haven’t filled their taxes? If that’s the case, are there still free services around for help doing so?
Some of us filed for an extension to finish our taxes. The deadline is Oct 15.
This is separate from filing your taxes for most of those who’s checks are outstanding. Some elderly and disabled, since they receive primarily government assistance as their sole source of income, do not need to file tax return, and thus did not automatically get the rebate checks. They need to file separately for that, and is the likely reason so many have not obtained the checks they are eligible for.
So for the people that don’t need to file a tax return, what do they need to do to get their checks? I’m guessing there’s some complicated form for them to fill out… anyone know where to find this form?
JoeOn11th- The details for claiming those checks and other related questions are at the link below. I think the situation is that you have to file a return, and since most of these folks don’t normally do so, that is why they haven’t gotten their checks. I think they just have to do a 1040A form:

The DC Earned Income Tax Campaign is having a free filing day on Oct 11 at MLK library from 10am-2pm.
People who haven’t filed their taxes (either because they don’t earn enough to pay taxes, don’t know how to file, or weren’t able to for whatever reason) can come in and have IRS-certified volunteers prepare their returns.
A link to the flyer about the event is here: http://caab.org/images/pictures/PDFs/ESP_Day_flyer_Oct08.pdf
http://www.dceitc.org has more information about the EITC Campaign. If you have any questions about the Campaign or the event, I’m the Volunteer Coordinator for the Campaign and you can get in touch with me at aperry@caab.org
I also wanted to mention that the back of the flyer has information on eligibility requirements and what filers need to bring on the 11th.
