From Tina:

Commonweatlh Gastropub, at 1400 Irving Street, is hosting a British-style Fancy Dress Party to the tune of Vicars and Tarts. The party starts at 9pm in the pub and get this, there is NO cover charge! There will be costume prizes and a champagne toast at midnight. The bar at Commonwealth is a lot of fun and really has nice neighborhood vibe. I’ve met a few of the bartenders, who are always friendly and attentive and really know their stuff. I don’t know if they will be behind the bar on New Years but if they are indicative of the rest of the staff at Commonwealth, you are sure to have a good time and be well taken care of. You can also fill your belly before the party with a 3 course meal (prices start at $25/person) from 5 – 8 in the dining room. Reservations aren’t required for the after-party, but if you want to be sure to snag a seat for dinner you should call ahead at 202-265-1400.

If you’re in the mood for rock-and-roll, most of the local music venues are offering shows or dance parties for fairly reasonable prices, and you are sure to be partying with a fun crowd. At the 930 club you can catch some funk/soul rock with Robert Randolph and the Family Band. The Rock and Roll Hotel is offering a variety of music and dancing for a variety of prices. $30 gets you in, $50 gets you rail open bar, and if you shell out $80 you have open access to top shelf until 1am. There’s even a free shuttle from Union Station. The Red & The Black doesn’t seem to have a plan quite yet, but according to their website the bar is OPEN! At the Black Cat you can get your swing-dance on with Peaches O’Dell and her Orchestra, or you can shake your butt to the musical stylings of DJ Mark Zimin on the backstage – all for only $25.

And last but not least, If you’re looking for something a little more grimy, I’d suggest heading over to Chief Ike’s Mambo Room at 1725 Columbia Road. That place always has a few surprises in store, and I’d recommend a drink or two before you hit the dance floor, but for 20 bucks and your own bottle of champagne I’d say the Mambo Room is making good on its promise of an “Economy Busting Celebration!”

New Year’s Eve Recommendations by Raz

Asylum

Asylum in Adams Morgan (www.asylumdc.com) is featuring DJ Lil’E of the Black Cat’s Right Round dance party, spinning tunes from the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s. The cover is a (relatively) mere $10. Doors open at 5pm.

Marvin

Marvin (14th and U) (www.marvindc.com) is hosting DJ Jahsonic on New Years Eve, who mixes hip-hop, R&B and funk. The heated outdoor patio will be open, and there is no cover. Doors open at 5:30pm.

Looking Glass Lounge

If you are looking for something more casual with no cover, Looking Glass Lounge (www.lookingglasslouge.webs.com), located on Georgia Avenue in Petworth is a good option. A friend of mine went here last year and had fun. They even have a rye whiskey toast to ring in the New Year. Doors open at 5pm.

  • u street girl

I’m all for a house party vs going to a club on New Years, more laid back, most of the time more fun, and you don’t end up paying an arm and a leg to celebrate.

Also, for those who are heading out, Sticky Rice is having a pretty sweet party by Soul Monkey: no cover, DJ, and fun all around – http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/misc-events/soul-monkey,1154834.html

  • new girl

I thought you were going to advocate a trip “down under” to ring in the New Year! :-)
