Taking PoP Semi-pro
01 December 2008 10:00 AM | By Prince Of Petworth in adminYou may notice that I have a new ad up after my second post. These ads have enabled me to take a baby step towards full time blogging. I am happy to announce that this week starts my semi-pro career as a blogger. I am switching to 4 days a week for my day job and am taking a corresponding pay cut (though I do get to keep my benefits). I do hope to take PoP full time in a year or so but I thought I’d dip my toe in the waters first. Anyway, now I’ll have a bit more time to do some interviews with folks that I’ve been having trouble getting in touch with during weekend and evening hours. If there are any other features you’d like to see be sure to let me know. I have a few ideas in mind but I’d love to get some suggestions from you guys as well. As always your tips, emails and comments are invaluable to me.
On a side note I’ll be in and out of email touch this week so I apologize in advance if it takes me a little while for me to return your emails.

Great news! The ads don’t really bother me.

Take a look at the Get Rich Slowly blog. This guy did the same thing in the course of a year and paid down debt. Throw in the daily podcast from Dave Ramsey and you’re off to a great start!

Congratulations to the Prince on his accomplishment.

Wow!! Full time!! But tell me, will you have to pay for your own health insurance out of pocket, since you won’t be employed by whoever your day job is?

Congratulations. Of course, you realize that now you are going to be held to a higher degree of scrutiny! Pros don’t get the benefit of the doubt that amateurs do. But I guess since you’ll be semi-pro, you’ll get semi-benefit of the doubt.

i’d love to see a local business directory with ratings. i guess you can go to yelp for that too, but i think here people would be more inclined to provide comments.

Congratulations!
Also, I just want to point out that Semi-Pro was a way funnier movie than it had any right to be.

Congrats on the news…one suggestion for you; sometimes you post so many articles that I think there are some interesting (restaurant suggestions, random thoughts, reader input, etc…) articles that seem like they are gone from the first page before several people even get to see them. Any chance you can allow the front page to contain more articles?

Michelle, a local directory is in the works but there is a lot of tech mumbo jumbo that has to get worked out. Stay tuned…

congrats on disconnecting from the rat race! my first suggestion—get out of the NW quadrant of the city and do some of your ‘door of the day’ walk arounds and stuff like that in places like michigan park, hillcrest, and the like. if you’re going to cover DC, take it full speed ahead!

What Chewy said. Also congratulations.

I guess it’s too late to say “don’t quit your day job.”

It’s wonderful that you’re embarking on this adventure and we all wish you the very best.
A constructive criticism: The {door, coffee spot, house deal} of the day stuff is good but I tend not to read those articles (especially as I use the RSS feed to see PoP). A little context would go a long way. You post these things because you think they’re cool. Why? Give us a little more personality int this classification of posts and I think you’ll find it generates even more discussion than they already get.

Hi, congrats on building the PoP site.
Here’s my idea for the future:
-branding one-time volunteer events under the PoP name and bringing out readership to contribute to the community (tree plantings, urban farming, feeding the hungry, park cleanup, etc.) and meet each other in person.
