  • They rotate those sometimes – have you heard how they found so many of these? Stashed in a bridge!

Are there any plans to develop that corner which is now all boarded up? It has been sitting vacant for years and is such an eye sore. There were signs all over it about some sort of property auction about a year ago, but haven’t seen any signs of development. Seems like such an ideal location.

  • On the topic of cool old photos of the city – does anyone know where Red Rocks got all the photos they have on their walls? I guess I could ask them next time I’m there, but there’s a really great one of Adams Morgan I’d love to get a print of.

Along the lines of ontarioroader’s question, does anyone have any tips for finding historical photos of places in DC? I think I heard somehwere that you can get copies of photos at either the Library of Congress or the National Archives, does anyone know more about that?

I have some info: The Library of Congress has made their archives accessible to the public, with no known restrictions on using the photos. It’s all on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/

You have to do some searching to find DC photos, but I could (and have) waste hours looking through them.

  • I use to Digitize Pictures for smithsonian and they sale pictures (pricey). The American History museum have a good sized photo collection.

I think the process is you make an appointment and goto the Library and search, then they send the request in for digital or printed copies. i did this from 98-04 so im not sure how much have changed since then. The guy who use to be in charge of the office (Office of Imagin and Photographic Services) is John Jones.

I told POP I was going to send him some of the ones I have from 1865 to the mid to late 1950′s. I just need to scan them when i have free time.

I’ve posted this before but this site :http://shorpy.com/ has tons of old neighborhood and people pix from DC, and you can order picture and poster sized prints pretty affordably from them.

  • DC_Chica:
There are a LOT of good places for historic photos of DC. Here are a few links:
    The Historical Society: http://www.historydc.org/
    The Washingtoniana Room at DCPL:http://www.dclibrary.org/dcpl/cwp/view.asp?a=1264&q=566688
    Library of Congress:http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/
    National Archives:http://www.archives.gov/index.html

In addtion, almost every church, synagogue, community association, etc., has an archive. Always worth asking.

Good point PoP, reminds me of pictures even older taken by the late Gordon Parks nearby at Georgia and Florida Avenues way back in 1942, note the picture of a man in a straw hat taken at that corner with in the background a building (Koss) recently Popeyes that still stands…looks like they put on a new roof there.

Go to the DC Historical Society library (in the old Carnegie Library building by the convention center). They have a ton of old pictures, among other great resources. However, you need to come armed with an address or specific area of research — you can’t just flip through the collection. They charge fees to have pictures reproduced so it can get expensive quickly.
