I was all for the “Yes We Can!” but I think “We Did It”. So for any other new causes lets be a little creative and come up with a new slogan. Or if we have to recycle slogans let’s use the best – from the great Adlai Stevenson – “The Thinking Man’s Candidate”. So we can say, “DC Statehood – The Thinking Man’s Objective”. Or perhaps we can update it to say “The Thinking Person’s Objective”. Adlai was the master orator although I guess he never did win the presidential elections… Anyone else tired of everyone using Obama slogans for other causes and marketing purposes (like Pepsi)?
Anyway, these signs are all over DC now. DCist has a little background info. They say:
“Over the weekend, D.C. voting rights activists hung signs advocating for statehood. Designed to look like the District’s flag and emblazoned with Obama’s “Yes We Can!” slogan, the signs were the brainchild of Shadow Senator Michael Brown and paid for by the D.C. Statehood Fund.”

Oh..Damn…
PoP and others -
I recently had a discussion with my wife about whether statehood would be a good thing for DC. What are the perceived benefits other than representation in Congress and more autonomy (and is that thing necessarily a pro)?
How about(?): !Si, se puede!
But I really prefer: Statehood Now, Damnit!!!
I support any slogan which inspires the target demographic to action. Hitching DC Statehood to the coattails of Obama’s rallying cry may be tiresome but it may also be an effective method energize the population. I’d rather manipulate the pre-existing passions of a historic presidency for the good of the district than take my chances with a snappy new phrase that will look good on dilapidated signs sloppily hung around the hood long after the vote/referendum/coin toss is defeated in congress due to lack of public support.
Anybody see Pepsi’s ridiculous new ad campaign? Their slogans include “Yes You Can” and “Choose Change” – and they tweaked their logo to make it look more like the Obama horizon logo. And they’re claiming it’s just a coincidence. It’s offensively absurd.
All the good slogans are already taken. “Choose Life.” “Choose Jif.”
How about “F**k and Kill?” That seems to work for the younger people in DC.
“What are the perceived benefits other than representation in Congress and more autonomy (and is that thing necessarily a pro)?”
Justice.
Ikea is jumping on the band wagon too. They’ve got their “Yes You Can have more shelving” or something to that extent all over the chinatown metro.
“F*ck a filibuster! D.C. Statehood Now!”
re:>What are the perceived benefits other than representation in Congress and more autonomy (and is that thing necessarily a pro)?
The representation everyone’s talking about is just in the House. Still doesn’t mean we get a vote in the Senate. Statehood would give us a senator.
Autonomy will give us the authority to write our own damn laws and not have to worry about Congress overturning them. So, don’t trivialize it.
If we do get a vote here in the District, let’s all make sure Eleanor Holmes Norton is not our elected official. She needs to go!
