I wrote about Pan Lourdes opening up on 14th Street north of Park a few weeks ago. I just noticed that they’ve been doing a bit of work inside and got a sweet new sign. Coincidentally, a reader just emailed the following:
“I saw a week or two ago a post about the new El Salvadorian bakery, Pan Lourdes, on 14th. Several people commented that they wished that it would have more than just sweet bread. I went back in today after a week or two without stopping by and noticed that they now have regular homemade loaves. I picked up 3 (3 for $1) and they were very fresh and delicious.”
Right on.

It is located at 801 K Street, in Penn Quarter/Chinatown. A bit random but I dig it. You guys?

That the guy is so out of proportion. It looks like the guy has a shrunken head. I’m just saying, I think it takes away from the message is all…

This cool stand alone in Adams Morgan has a bit of a New Orleans flavor to me.

I thought this was a bit odd and also very cool. It is randomly on the side of rowhome by the park at 11th and Monroe. Apparently it is of a trolley from 1890. A bit random, yeah? Anyone know if there was a trolley line on 11th Street back in the day?

I have a weakness for kung fu signs. But I’m really curious about “Lion Dance” is… This was taken on U Street between 15th and 14th.

I think these rowhomes are coming along nicely. What do you think – do they fit in with the block?
And remember we were talking about those “v” things that were going in up top? Here’s what they look like now?

A reader writes:
“I received this glossy postcard (like the kind strip clubs scatter about) trumpeting the virtues of this house. I remember some time back you featured it while it was under construction; your readers proceeded to flay it. Now it’s been gussied up, repackaged as “green”…You might want to revisit.”
Revisit I shall! So the 2 bed/2.5 bath is going for $423,000 and the 2 bed/2 bath is going for $369,000. Do you think either are a good deal? And of course what do you think about the units and building itself?

I think it looks awesome. I’m super glad they chose Duke! What do you think?
So from time to time when I write about Meridian Hill Park people get a bit upset because they believe the true name is Malcolm X park. But I just noticed walking by the other day that it has Meridian Hill etched into the stone on the border of the park. So is that a recent addition? When did the name change occur? Anyone believe one name is more appropriate than another?

We judged the best burgers in town. Now, a reader would like to know where we can find the best crab cakes. I’ve never had one at The Heights but I hear they’re pretty good. A friend of mine is a huge devotee of the crab cakes found at Eastern Market. So where’s the best one you’ve had?

Fire Engine at Watergate, originally uploaded by Vicki’s Pics.
I couldn’t find a photo of Engine Co. 6 but props to them! From a reader:
“I just wanted to give the firefighters of DC Engine Company 6 a much-needed shout out. My carbon monoxide detector started going off this morning, and my roommate and I called 311 after going outside. We were immediately and professionally transferred to 911, who sent a truck within 5 or 10 minutes. The firefighters were super-friendly and polite, and even got along great with the landlord’s two dogs. They had to call in another unit with a carbon monoxide detector, who also showed up promptly, and led the way into the apartment to test it. It turned out to be a false alarm, but the whole thing was handled really well by DCFD. They made what could have been a worrying occasion much easier and really helped out.”
Sometimes we take the good guys for granted.
