Litteri's and Mangialardo's both make some excellent sandwiches. I prefer the latter only because I've been going here since I was a kid and the Super G Man is enough sandwich to smother a nun. Why people go to the Subway around the corner is beyond me.

There's a great interview with Joe Mangialardo where he talks about growing up on Capitol Hill, weathering the riots, how the "G Man" got its name, and why he stopped making fresh sausage.

I think you're wrong here --- Mangialardo's makes some kick ass sandwiches, the service is great, and the price is low.

Yeah, that's probably Litteri's. I wrote about it here: http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2008/08/an-afternoon-at-the-capital-city-market-by-nichole/

We have a million Italian markets where I'm from (Pittsburgh) and Litteri's is the only thing that comes close. (By which I mean it's "fine." Not great and my Italian relatives wouldn't think much of it, but for DC, it's off the scale awesome.) Now, if I could just fine a decent Hungarian grocery to please the rest of (and the majority) of my family, we'd be all set. Sure that little Russian place off of Slater's Lane in Alexandria is okay for Vegeta and decent sour cherries, but it doesn't satisfy my Magyar needs.

Nichole, you may well be right. I knew it was an old fashioned italian place on or near Capitol Hill. Thought this was the one.

Groceries? Really? Are you sure you're not thinking of Litteri's? Because I saw very little in the way of groceries when I was in the other week. Grocery-wise, Litteri's definitely has Mangialardo's beat.

One of my best friend's parents were Italian immigrants to this country. Every few months, my friend takes her father to that store to get Italian groceries, such as cheese and other things. She says it's the best.

Great post Nichole....luckily working on the Hill allows me to make it to this gem every so often. These are hands down the BEST sandwiches in the District. I'm a sucker for the classic meatball, but their cold cut sandwiches are fantastic as well.

Oh, and there is a girl who works there is an adorable girl who works behind the counter there....always makes me smile :)

The only that sucks about this place is the hours. Whenever I'm in the area, I make it a point to stop in and get something. Some of the best food in the food.
