Was This Really A Problem? Really?

DSCN5785, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I saw this sign at a park in Capitol Hill. How big of a problem was martini drinking in public parks? Although from the sign I assume it is still okay to drink Kir Royales…

Those signs are all along the parks on Pennsylvania around the 500 block of SE and Seward Park. Actually have a snap of one here: http://flickr.com/photos/mkinne/2305746773/

The real reason is the parks are home (which includes recreational or medicinal drinking) to many of the homeless in the summer months, and there is also penchant to see Hill staff and Marines crowding the streets and drinking fairly heavily on warm evenings.

Personally, I just like the sign’s 70′s feel.

  • It’s ok as long as the martini is in a paper bag – that somehow makes it legal, and magically invisible to law enforcement in this town.

I LOVE the attention to detail on that sign. The red of the pimiento…

My old office got busted by the cops for bringing along beers to a softball game — fortunately they just told us to get rid of it (it is illegal to drink in public parks) and left it at that.

  • I wonder if I can get in trouble now that i’ve taken up Drinking and Bicycling?

  • Pennywise

Me and my crew used to get all tore up on Grey Goose martinis and bust people in the head. So, its probably my fault.

As someone who walks past that park to and from work those signs have been around for quite a while. However, there is/was a non profit that feeds the homeless on 8th and Penn and that has turned into a bit of a homeless park at least the summer. So now – yes definitely I think those signs might be appropriate. Some things as obvious as they may be still need to be said.

Interestingly a few months ago two trash can were set on fire. One was totally melted (the remains are still is there) – and while I don’t know who did it.

That sign should also include a crack pipe and a blunt.
