Great New Service Coming To Georiga Ave.

Career Gear located at 3320 Georgia Ave. is an organization that provides suits for men seeking employment. They also provide career counseling, and interview coaching. You can learn more about the organization here. I spoke with executive director, Louis Henderson, who explained that folks don’t just walk in off the street but are sent through a referral service. Seems like a great mission, I’m glad to see such a cool organization open up on Georgia Ave.

Tivoli North Banners Approved by ANC

DSCN6216, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

When I first posted about Tivoli North, I have to admit I had no idea it would be so controversial. An eagle eye reader spotted the following notice from today’s NW Current Newspaper under the ANC 4C meeting notes:

“voted 8-2, with Joseph Vaughan and Michael Yates dissenting, to allow the Tivoli North Business Association to install grant-financed banners on 14th Street between Spring and Shepherd streets in efforts to bring unity to the community. Commission chair Joseph Martin said the banners would help build civic pride. Vaughan said some businesses might not want to be called Tivoli North.”

This is not an official designation from the city but simply an initiative from the Tivoli North Business Association. Now that a bit of time has passed and the sponsor is known – do you think you’ll find the banners (name) offensive now knowing that the stated aim is to bring unity to the community along 14th Street?

This stonework is incredible though I’m not sure if I support the two columns to the left versus the 4 columns on the right.

House of the Day

Got to love the mini houses. Interestingly there is another one almost directly across the street (I think I featured it back in the day). They are located in Shaw on 10th Street if memory serves.

Capturing City Signs Before They Vanish Forever

DSCN6596

It’s a bit faded but you can see on the red brick in the background it says – Chrysler. I wonder if there was a Chrysler plant back in the day or if it was just an old advertisement. Anyone recognize the location? I’ll give you a hint the building in front of it is a gym.

Judging Buildings

DSCN6610

This has to be the craziest contrast in styles I’ve ever seen. This is from Mass. Ave east of Dupont Circle. The building on the left is the Uzbekistan Embassy and the modern styled one on the right is the Institute of International Economics. Wow. What do you think of them individually? And next to each other? Super cool or a tragedy?

Good Deal or Not? Weekly Wed. House Porn Edition

DSCN6626

This house is located right off Logan Circle at 1305 Rhode Island Ave, NW:

The flier says:

“This is a wonderful 4 unit building. CofO, business license. Large one BR is owner occupied, English basement, 2nd and 3rd floors are all 2BR 2BA units. In Logan Circle historic district. Just one house off the Circle. Income of $6650 montly for 3 units. One large 1BR is owner occupied.”

More info and a virtual tour can be found here.

What do you think of the exposed wood beams? I think they’re pretty sweet. This is an interesting selection as it is broken up into units and one of the units is already owner occupied. The asking price is $2,100,000. It seems to me that might be worth it if it were for all the units but the fact that one unit is occupied makes me hesitant. That and the fact that I don’t have $2,100,000… What do you think of the house itself?

The Mansion at O St by Hipchickindc

Mansion at O St 02-16-09 013

Do you ever walk around Dupont Circle and wonder what is behind the ornate Victorian facades of the mansions that were built for DC’s rich and famous back in the day? I know I’m always curious about both the interiors and the history of these architectural wonders. While so many of them have been cut into trendy condos and apartments, The Mansion at O Street presents a unique adventure and a particularly Washingtonian experience.

I had no idea that this treasure even existed until a friend took me for a belated birthday outing to O-dinner-tini (yes, really) on Monday night. This event apparently takes place every Monday night from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. I was completely swept away upon crossing the threshold.

Walking into The Mansion at O Street involves being greeted by several staff members who showed us to the coat room and our table and the bar. The interior is festooned with a ridiculous number of huge ornate crystal chandeliers, and rich Victorian architectural details such as carved woodwork and a decorative ceiling. Serving as a gallery, as well as a hotel, the rooms are covered from floor to ceiling with artwork and such curiosities as guitars signed by rock stars.

As intense as the décor is, the food is quite spectacular as well. The front parlor is home to an extensive display of extreme desserts. The dinner buffet has a room of its own, with cuisine ranging from elegant comfort foods including beef stew and garlic mashed potatoes, to a wide range of vegetarian choices such as pastas and soups. Most fun, however, is the peanut butter station, which included white bread, marshmallow fluff, honey, and of course, jelly. (I’d say The Mansion would be a fun kid outing for older elementary school age and up.) During the meal, we were well attended by the plentiful white-gloved staff. Continues after the jump. (more…)

Not from the forum section but a reader would like to know if anyone has some info on “What was happening at Gallatin around nh tonight (Feb. 17th) at 7? There were tons of cops and helicopters circling.”

Armed Forces Retirement Home Development Stalled

http—www.afrh.gov-afrh-news-newslet-newslet_0708communicator.pdf – Adobe Reader, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Remember this? Remember all that debate about a public park? I guess it was all for naught.

The Washington Post had the big story on this yesterday. They wrote:

“The sagging real estate market has prompted the Armed Forces Retirement Home to freeze an ambitious plan to build housing, a hotel, a supermarket and medical offices on a sprawling portion of its Northwest Washington campus.”

Wow. This is really big news. I know this development was super controversial because a lot of green space was going to be developed. So I’m super curious to find out what you guys think – glad the development has stalled or will miss the development?
