Dear PoP – What is This?

Picture, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

A reader asks:

“This is a random question, but I was hoping you or someone out there would know the answer. I was on the 37 bus this morning going toward downtown on Massachusetts Avenue, between 23rd St and 22nd St NW. I saw these banners on the lamp posts that said “Remember Me” and they showed an image of the Earth and space, with some twinkly star design. It was really strange, and I didn’t know what the sign was supposed to mean. I wasn’t sure, but I thought that it maybe had something to do with Space Shuttle Challenger exploding? Does anyone know what those banners are supposed to be reminding us of?”

Hmm, this is a tough one. I think if it were related to the challenger there would be an image of the space shuttle. I wonder if there is any religious connection here. Could it be related to a Church? Could it be connected to the building with the flag that we see in the photo? I’m gonna go with some sort of church affiliation. What do you guys think?

True Story Becomes Morgan’s on 18th Street, NW

DSCN6601, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Remember the discussion we had about the signage for the bar True Story? It looks like that debate has become moot. I thought I was losing my mind for a second, when I couldn’t find the storefront. Alas, the spot was painted over and given a new name. Anyone check out the new spot yet?

Judging Pop Ups

DSCN6638

I’ve been monitoring the progress of this pop up on 10th Street south of Florida Ave. I have to say it’s looking a lot better than I originally anticipated but it still seems a little off. Obviously it still has a little ways to go but so far would you give it a thumbs up or down?

Do Faults Like Pandas? (By Matt)

IMG_0877

Ed. Note: Here is a little background on faults from Wikipedia.

The only visible part of the most famous overthrust fault in DC (Darton’s fault) has an amazing view of the national zoo from its perch just above where Adams Mill Rd peaks on its rise from Rock Creek Park. It sat up there as little Butterstick the Panda was born and must really enjoy the view of the creek bottom when the leaves turn in the fall. Zoo Lights evenings in December must be cool too, romantic even. If the “Fault Seeking Fault” section of Craigslist.org hadn’t been overtaken by scammers and weirdos years ago, he might have a snowball’s chance in hell of sharing those evenings with a special lady fault (Don’t hate. Faults can’t just go out and cruise happy hour looking for love like the rest of us.)

But perhaps the biggest issue for the fault since the 1920s is that it has been housed in an “exhibit”, clearly not designed by the flappers of that time, who rained reigned cool. I’ve never been at the mouth of a sealed mine, but that’s what the concrete walls and black chain link hemming in that little fault look like to me. I hope that any self-respecting flapper would have smacked whatever person or agency representatives responsible for designing that exhibit in the mouth with a beaded purse and a string of pearls on opening day.

If that agency or anyone from that design team is still kicking, they should be fitted with an ankle bracelet set to tase whenever it is within 50 yards of a drafting table. I say this because if the design sensibility encapsulated in that exhibit ever catches on I am sure that we will be opening our arms to Communism and, as much as I love a long line for bread, I’d rather not. Continues after the jump. (more…)

Good Deal or Not? Fixer Upper Edition

DSCN6639

This home is located at 3546 Rock Creek Church Road, NW:

The flier says:

“This single family home is waiting for your touches. Home is sold strictly as-is. Seller will make no repairs. Home features 3 possible 4 bedrooms 1 possible 2 full baths, parking in rear of yard, upper and lower entry to home. Large living room, separate dining room, partially finished basement. This is perfect for investors or contractors”

More info but sadly no photo found here.

I think this is a great location as it’s close to the Petworth Metro but also close to all the development on 11th Street. But for a clear fixer upper the asking price may be a bit high. Do you think $399,000 would be a good deal or not? What would be a more realistic price?

Judging Restaurants – New Orleans Cafe

DSCN6605

I’ve recently been wondering about the New Orleans Cafe located at 2412 18th Street in Adams Morgan. Do they have a good po boy? Apparently they also have live music. So how’s the food, music and atmosphere?

Nichole Remembers Why She Loves Jimmy T’s

SUC50008

You know how when you live in one place for a long time, you sort of start to take for granted what’s neat about it? Sometimes it takes a new eye to remind you of why you’re there in the first place. Well, this is kind of like that.

I sometimes forget that the rest of the city kind of ignores my part of the world, especially that stuff which isn’t conveniently located on Pennsylvania Ave., 8th St., H St. or at Eastern Market. So when I offhandedly mentioned to my NW-dwelling friend that I’d gotten food at Jimmy T’s today, she actually asked, “What is that?”

It’s not her fault really. I have a hard time dragging my friends over here for a night out (to their credit though, it does happen) let alone cheap, greasy, comfort breakfast, and I can see how I may not have really mentioned it since it’s Jimmy T’s – it’s just not all that special.

SUC50006

Sure, there’s the Leg Lamp from A Christmas Story. And an autographed Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle from A Christmas Story. And pictures of the cast from A Christmas Story. And sure they serve breakfast all day, except for Mondays and Tuesdays when they’re closed. But, it’s just Jimmy T’s, right? Continues after the jump. Dear PoP – Suspicious Gov’t Vehicles Edition

DSCN6522, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

“For the last three days there have been suspicious, government-issue cars sitting around 18th. sunday morning there were three champagne colored chevy impalas and two black suburbans just idling at the corner of Kilbourne and 18th. this suspicious activity has not subsided though the cars have changed. we were just wondering if you knew what was up, as we can find no info elsewhere….”

Hmm, I was hesitant to post this question as I don’t want to expose a vast government conspiracy. But my guess is that perhaps you live near an important government official in the Obama administration. Or it’s possible this could just be a regular stakeout though I’m pretty sure the black suburbans are used to escort government officials. Lastly, it’s possible that this is a secluded area that’s a good spot for a coffee break. Any other folks live around this area notice lots of gov’t vehicles lately? I’d say it’s all good until you start seeing helicopters…
