Oops, missed this — Pennywise, I wonder if your elm trees were victims of dutch elm disease. If one was infected, the others might have been cut down as a preventative measure, even if they didn’t look all that sick. It’s a pretty virulent disease. Sad to lose gorgeous old trees. I wish we had some on my block.

I saw a story in the Post that said that $15k tax credit may not apply to people buying in DC, because we already have the $5k credit. Eleanor is on it, though.

Finally, a tiny rave: I took some clothes to the thrift store on Georgia Avenue and ended up buying a nice pair of brown leather ankle boots by 9 West. $5! Sure, they’re a half size too big, but in socks it doesn’t matter.

We have pitbulls running around here unleashed constantly. Animal control is called, and the dogs are inevitably gone by the time they arrive. Luckily. they are rarely rough, and usually run away. What is going ON with these dog owners???

and a lil’ rave: I may be buying a condo, and I may get $15k off my taxes when I do! YES WE CAN, bitches.

About 2 years ago, I heard someone screaming in the front of our house. I was downstairs with my mom and my then almost 2 year old daughter. I opened the door and saw 2 kids screaming in my neighbor’s yard with a very angry pitbull in front of them. A fence separates our yards, so the kids were trapped. I went running into the yard with a chair and a broom. Thankfully, I scared off the pitbull, but it did bite one of the boys before I got out there. I had the kids come inside and told him to wash his wound (puncture marks – pretty deep) with soap and water. I bandaged him up as best I could and had him call his mom. She was very thankful and asked if I could walk him home (he lived around the corner). I said sure and as we walked home, he was very upset and jumpy. I did call animal control, but they never found the dog.

A few weeks ago, my neighbor and I saw an Akita wandering around our street. We both called animal control and they came right out. Ultimately, the dog’s owner came out, but they were ready to take the dog in. Thankfully, the dog seemed really chill.

I’m sorry this happened to you. Thankfully, you were not injured too badly. It’s a good reminder for everyone to call animal control if they see a dog wandering around. You just never know.

the d.c literay society will tutor i think thats the name, call a local library they often tutor in them. they will probably be able to get the info you need. good luck

I only Rant, thus:

DC and PEPCO cut down another 100-year-plus elm tree the other day. When I moved to my street almost five years ago we had six gorgeous elms providing shade. Now we have three and the street is becoming that barren DC ghetto sort of thing I’d rather avoid. Why is it so easy for the city to cut down trees so frequently? Why why why???

Rant: I was walking my dog when we had a bad encounter with an off-leash pit bull. Luckily no one was seriously hurt. The dog had no intention of killing anything or my dog would be dead and I’d be in the hospital, but still scary as it charged my 24 lb French Bulldog then proceeded to jump on me after leaping over a fence to get to us.

Readers – PLEASE be attentive when out with your dogs. If you don’t have a dog, be on the lookout for any off-leash dogs and call the cops. It is illegal. I live in a neighborhood with children and I can’t imagine this dog charging a toddler or senior citizen.

Rave: We have received tremendous support from our neighbors as a result of this incident.

I mentioned the guy earlier that can not read. Upward Bound may not be the program for him as he has no intention on going to college. But he is a GOOD WELL MANNERED kid. Do you have any suggestions for places that could tutor him in learning to read?

The weather was SO nice this weekend! I went out sat night without a coat and it was so nice to not be cold outside in the coat and then have to carry around a coat in a bar. I can’t wait until spring!
