This home is located at 3548 Rock Creek Church Road, NW:
The flier says:
“Spacious brick rowhouse near metro station in the Petworth area. 4 bedrooms on second floor and 1 in law suite with private kitchen and full bath in basement. Hardwood floors.”
More info and photos found here.
Back in February I showed the house on the left at 3546 Rock Creek Church Road which was for sale for $399,000 (3 beds 2 baths). Today’s house located right next door is a bit larger at 4 beds 3 baths. Fortunately we have photos to look at which seem nice but certainly not a recent renovation. The asking price is $575,000. I’m curious what you think about that price but I’m equally curious to hear your advice when the house right next door is for sale? Does the fact that the home is larger warrant such a price discrepancy?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

Youth violence, street harassment and the like are clearly very heated topics here at PoP, as they should be…I mean, these are serious issues. But, as we’ve seen in the past, and I’m sure we’ll see again, the internet – and the relative anonymity it provides – can be a dangerous place for discussions like this. As sad as some of the negativity and hateful comments on PoP’s post about his run-in with some rock-throwing kids made me feel, a meeting I had that very same afternoon definitely lifted my spirits. Regardless of where you stand on the issues at hand, I am hopeful that most of you will be as interested as I was to hear about what Landy Thompson and Andre Latimore are trying to do about it.
Thompson and Latimore are just as tired as anyone else of seeing kids causing trouble in the streets and no one knowing how to (or even wanting to) deal with them. They look at these kids and see good hearts suffering from a lack of love and attention at home that’s fulfilled through involvement in gangs or street crews, they see smart kids with poor self esteem, they see anger and pain that can manifest itself in ugly ways. On top of everything else, they see themselves as youth growing up in the Streets of Columbia Heights not too long ago.
Based on their own life experiences and modeled after a west coast organization called Homeboys, Inc., they are working to create their own non profit organization to reach out to at risk youth, called In Da Streets. And just as the name suggests, they are literally in the streets approaching youth, trying to deter them from fighting, bad choices, drug use, and future criminal activity. Continues after the jump. I am an unabashed lover of Dunkin Donuts so I’m pretty excited about this possibility. However, I also dig sushi so I’m a bit torn. I noticed some construction workers inside and inquired if they knew who was coming in. They told me that Dunkin Donuts, a sushi restaurant and other potential restaurants had looked at the spot. One guy said that the first one to put money down will get it.
So all things considered which would you prefer? Of course “other restaurants” is a little vague but that’s all I could get!

A reader caught one of the new Circulator buses on a training run at Irving and 15th. 2 new cirulator routes were announced, on the DCCirulator Web site, that they’ll be starting on Monday. Here’s a look at the routes:
You can view a bigger image here.
And Councilmember Jim Graham announces the start of the new 16th Street express bus the S9 and the new circulator routes:

Well this was really random sight. This entire chain link fence on Georgia Ave. was adorned with dozens of combination locks. Any ideas?

I love the proper cherry blossom festival and all but I equally love catching trees in bloom around town. This next month to six weeks could be the greatest time to enjoy DC.
Anyone check out the proper festival this weekend?

Thankfully I spotted this sign at the Florida Avenue Grill at 11th and Florida. I am very seriously tempted to purchase this one though…

“Dear PoP
Any idea what they’re doing to the Enterprise car rental at Georgia and Girard? I was riding by last night and there was a backhoe that looked like it was tearing up the lot. The building looked intact though.”
Fear not, Enterprise is alive and well on Georgia Ave. It is simply getting some plumbing work redone.
I have to ask – does anyone have a favorite car rental place in DC or just in general?

I once showed this fence back, back in the day. But I wasn’t able to capture how cool it really with a cell phone photo. This fence is truly phenomenal.

At first glance it looks like a normal rowhome. But I was surprised to see two doors. Seems like a pretty cool alternative to a condo in a big building.

I know folks were super excited about the Pho 14 preview a couple weeks ago. But I’ve been emailed some false rumors by multiple people that they will open on Sat. This is not true. I just spoke with one of the managers who told me it is likely the inspection will be held Monday morning. I have been told that I will be contacted immediately after they receive the ok. So trust me, I will make a separate post when they are open. And I’m just as excited as you guys, so keep your fingers crossed that the inspection happens Monday. Stay tuned…

The hidden gem, Meridian International Center, has a new exhibit. From an email:
Meridian International Center, together with the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) in Beijing, and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Washington, DC, has created a groundbreaking exhibition of Chinese contemporary art entitled METROPOLIS NOW! A Selection of Contemporary Chinese Art. It will open to the public in Meridian’s Cafritz Galleries in Washington, DC on Wednesday, March 25, 2009.
METROPOLIS NOW! is the result of a long-standing partnership that grew out of past artistic and cultural exchanges between Meridian and China. To identify artworks for this exhibition, Meridian’s Vice President for the Arts, Dr. Curtis Sandberg, and Director of Exhibitions, Terry Harvey, traveled to Beijing and Shanghai to collaborate with NAMOC Director, Fan Di’an, a renowned figure in the world of Chinese art, and his senior staff.
This compelling selection of 52 paintings, sculptures, mixed media, and video installations by 31 artists addresses the enormous changes taking place in China’s cities – specifically, the major art centers of Beijing and Shanghai. Visitors to the exhibit will gain new insights into aspects of urbanization and globalization in China, experiencing this through the eyes of 31 extraordinary artists.
I am interested in your editorial schedule and look forward to speaking with you about potential coverage of this exhibit. METROPOLIS NOW! will be on display at Meridian from March 25, 2009 – July 26, 2009. For latest updates, visit www.meridian.org.

Free Concert at American University Sat. Doors 6:30pm
From the Washington Post:
“We could not contain our squeal (the free part doesn’t hurt) when we heard Baltimore’s latest It band, Ponytail — a quartet of atonal art-rockers that made us feel alive and simultaneously disoriented when we caught them last year — is playing a free show tomorrow night at American University. The all-ages show, part of Internet radio station WVAU’s Capitol Punishment series, also features the Screaming Females and local indie-rock act Mittenfields.
Free. Doors at 6:30 p.m. American University, Kay Spiritual Life Center, 4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW. For details, http://www.wvau.org.”
Ed. Note: The following report was submitted by Christopher.
This month, the PoPville bookclub read ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane and Other Plays’ by Martin McDonagh. Set in rural Ireland, the plays lead you through petty squables, a couple of murders, some grave robbing, and an old lady being scalded with hot grease. What’s not to love?! The book was successful in setting a depressing mood, and I think the one thing that we all walked away from it with was a new found appreciation for our own families and friends. The plays are pretty short and easy to read (once you get through the irish slang), so check it out if you’re ever in the mood to feel better about your own personal relationships!
For April, the PoPville bookclub will be reading ‘The Heart is a Lonely Hunter’ by Carson McCullers, as part of the nationwide Big Read program. Your friendly Petworth neighborhood library has plenty of copies in, so swing by and grab one so you can look cool on the metro with it too! Our next meeting will be at the Red Derby on April 6th, 7:00pm for discussion on the book and a possible move to the Looking Glass Lounge for future non library meetings, followed by a wrap up meeting on April 20th, 7:00pm at the Petworth Library to have final discussions and pick a book for May.
We’ve spoken about Rib Pit back in the day. We’ve also spoken about the best BBQ in the city. But currently the Rib Pit is only for take out. I can’t possibly imagine how phenomenal the Lounge must have been when it was open. We need to start a campaign for a re-opening…

I thought this was an interesting contrast, one is vinyl and one is faux stone. The one with stone is really unusual as the stone covers the entire house except for an odd addition up top that seems to be vinyl:
Any fans?
