Dear PoP – What Happened To The Spice of Life Restaurant in Rosslyn?

Spice of Life, Lee High Road, London SE13, originally uploaded by Kake Pugh.

“Dear PoP,

My coworker and I live up in your neck of the woods (MtP for me, CH for him) and love the variety of delicious food options in that area. We work, unfortunately, in Rosslyn, the black hole of dining in DC. There was only one restaurant in the hood that was even remotely worth while to eat at: Spice of Life. They have a delicious chicken veggie hummous pita sandwich that I think is darn tasty (also some really good soups). One day the door was closed and the lights were off. No sign. No explanation. Nothing. It’s been months and we’re waiting for something: the owners got back from vacation, there was a health code violation, it was sold. Something. I know this isn’t exactly your jurisdiction, but do you have any news? Any other PoP readers?”

I’ve heard there are some good places in Rosslyn. Sadly, I never went to this one. Anyone work out in Rossyln know what happened to this joint (located at 1401 Wilson Blvd)?

Ed. Note: Photo above is from London but I couldn’t find a photo of the one in Rosslyn…

Though actually I really dig the steps leading up to it. Pretty unusual. I dig it.

House of the Day

DSCN8474, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I really like some of these rowhomes that have a bit of deep front yard. I can’t remember if I’ve asked this before but if your neighborhood becomes “safer” would you ever remove the bars from the first floor?

Petworth CVS Rendering

cvspet

The scandalous gossip from almost a year ago turns out to be true. Thanks to Petworth News who got the rendering above from Robb L. It says LaKritz Adler has signed a lease for a CVS to be built at Georgia and New Hampshire Ave and construction is set to begin in the fall with the store opening in late spring 2010.

I’ve come to support this addition. Have some of you guys changed your mind?

Judging Buildings – Cato Institute

DSCN8569

A number of folks have mentioned the Cato building located at 1000 Mass. Ave, NW. I have to say, it does look pretty cool. Does the glass part provide extra used space or is just for style?  (I can’t tell from the photo.) What do you think of the look, thumbs up or down?

Reports of Fire near McPherson Square

From a reader:

“Any idea what’s on fire downtown near McPherson Square? Our whole building smells like it’s on fire but we can’t seem to find the source!”

Anyone know what’s going on?  If someone snaps a photo send to princeofpetworth (at) gmail (dot) com.  Thanks!

Judging Restaurants – Loeb’s Deli

DSCN8621

Loeb’s Deli is located at 832 15th Street, NW. I have a former colleague who swore by this place. As we are often discussing where we can get the best sandwiches I thougth Loeb’s was worth discussing, especially for those that work downtown. Personally, I’m super curious about the pastrami sandwiches, I’m always on the look out for some good pastrami. So any fans? Any specialties? And what always tips me off to good delis, do they have Dr. Browns soda? (Any Dr. Browns Celery fans out there?)

An Evening with Gabe Klein by Frank

kleinphoto
From left to right: Gabe Klein, Director of DDOT; David Alpert of Greater Greater Washington; and Stewart Schwartz, Executive Director of the Coalition for Smarter Growth

It was standing room only last Thursday evening in David Alpert’s Dupont Circle rowhouse.  The Greater Greater Washington blogger, jointly with the DC-based Coalition for Smarter Growth, was hosting an evening with Gabe Klein, the new director of the District Department of Transportation.  The crowd was a mix of students, local transit and urban planning activists, and interested third parties.  But everyone in attendance had one thing in common – to them, Gabe Klein was a star.

Before his appointment to DDOT in December 2008, Klein was the entrepreneur famous for helping start On the Fly, the company that has dispatched its seemingly ubiquitous food vending, eco-friendly smart karts across DC.  Before that, he was the local regional vice president of Zipcar, which has helped reduce DC’s dependence on non-transit transportation.  He was also previously the operations director for Bikes USA.  Klein was already well-known in the transportation and business communities for his environmental and transit efforts, so when Mayor Fenty announced his intent to appoint Klein to DDOT, it signaled a major commitment to moving DC’s transit initiatives toward new transportation solutions.

Klein’s vision is to turn DC into a leader in the field of alternative transportation—public bike systems, ride sharing, etc—and eventually convince people to think of alternative transportation as standard transportation.  He’s certainly got no shortage of ideas.  A strong proponent of DC’s Bicycle Program, he wants to expand access to public bikes throughout the city.  He also mentioned a new initiative to partner with Metro, Pepco, and automobile companies to lay infrastructure for electric cars along with new SmartBike locations.  Klein didn’t provide many details about the program, but if successful, DC would become one of the nation’s earliest adopters of this type of electrification.   Continues after the jump (more…)

More Sweet Scuttlebutt – “Top Chef” contestant Carla Hall Looking at Spaces in Columbia Heights

Top chef finalist creating heart healthy meal, originally uploaded by Sister to Sister.

Ed. Note: If Missy Frederick can confirm this there is a free t-shirt in it for her.

A PoP reader attended a fundraiser this week for a prominent Democrat in Congress. The event was catered by Alchemy Catering…a catering service operated by Carla Hall who was a contestant on “Top Chef”. She’s lived in the DC area for a long time.

The reader was able to chat with her for about 15 minutes and mentioned that he lives in Columbia Heights. Ms. Hall mentioned that she visited the neighborhood a couple days ago looking at an empty space in the Highland Park building. Apparently, Ms. Hall is looking for a new space where she can have a cooking school of sorts, along with a dining room somehow associated with cooking classes. The format seemed uncertain, but the general description made the reader think of the new cooking class/wine tasting space that Zola opened at the corner of 9th and E Streets, NW.
