Insanely Random Sight in Columbia Heights

DSCN7886, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I asked this woman what this was and she replied matter of factly – it’s a ball of trash. Of course it is. Then she rolled away. This is from 14th Street outside the Tivoli theater.

    Katamari Damacy ?

“The game’s plot concerns a diminutive prince on a mission to rebuild the stars, constellations and Moon, which were accidentally destroyed by his father, the King of All Cosmos. This is achieved by rolling a magical, highly adhesive ball called a katamari around various locations, collecting increasingly larger objects, ranging from thumbtacks to people to mountains, until the ball has grown large enough to become a star.”

Saw them rolling down Park. Interesting but maybe not the most efficient way to pick up trash.

This is nothing compared to “balloon girl” that I saw on Sunday. She was enclosed in this balloon sculpture made out of the types of balloons clowns use to make animals and just walking around as her friends followed her with other balloon attachments. Saw Sunday afternoon at Florida and Sherman. Man I wish I had my camera with me.

Kind of like the human version of a dung beetle!

Hmmm…wishing she had gloves on…what’s with all the horking and spitting up mucus loogies on the street here in DC? Especially around CH? Seriously? It’s so, so disgusting – someone almost spat on my foot the other day and if looks could kill, I’d be in serious trouble today. Stop it! And that poor lady with her trash ball is touching all that…urrrrgghhhh.

(FWIW, I’m not a crazy germophobe, and perhaps over time I’ll get used to the insane amounts of spitting I see here in DC, but it will take LOTS of time)

Speaking of odd weekend sights, does anyone know why hundreds of teenagers were having a pillow fight in Dupont Circle on Saturday afternoon? It was an usually organized sort of pillow fight. There was an adult lining them up and yelling “go” and time limits, from what I observed. It was kind of obnoxious.

    Forgot to post this email:

Everyone is invited to come and join in the pillow-fighting mayhem at two locations (the Mall and Dupont Circle) on April 4, 2009 starting at 2 PM. Please check the details and RSVP at the Facebook event, or learn more about the event at the International Pillow Fight Day website.

Newbie, I’ve been here for four years, and I still glare daggers at all the nasty spitters. I’m no germophobe either, but I do have a toddler, and to me, spitting is akin to urinating. Sure, everyone has to do it from time to time, but for the love of pete, do it in a proper, private, hygenic way. Of course, lots of public urination around here, too… and worse.

  • newbiehere

WDC, glad to see that you agree, and it’s true, sometimes one does have to spit. But around here, the insanely loud “snort thru nostril and gather up the large loogie and spit it as far as it can go” scenario has literally made me run across the street to avoid being hit. It’s absolutely foul! It’s hard to imagine how hard it must be for parents with small children (who will touch anything if unattended). Haven’t encountered any public urination (and worse) yet, but it’s always good to have something to look forward to…I guess. I probably should have put this on the reader “Rant and Rave” section, but I don’t have much to rave about today, alas…

Perhaps it’s time to put up “No Spitting” signs, along with the “No Public Urination”? Yes?

i would like to see her credentials before we let her rebuild our universe…

    It is like a Katamari!!!!

  • Geezer

The litter problem in DC seems to be getting worse by the day. We need some city leadership to change behavior in this city vis-à-vis trash. Idiot litterers need to understand that they are working against their self-interest.

That explains what I just saw near Tryst this rainy Monday morning. I don’t know how it made it over to Adams Morgan (rolled I guess). But by the time it arived it was just a deflated plastic sheet with washed out paint and crap sitting on the sidewalk.

    I guess whoever made it doesn’t recycle…

I saw the ball on the GW campus yesterday. That’s a good three miles’ worth of loogies and beer cans getting it up to CH…

  • Parkwood Person

Newbie- I had to laugh at your ‘And that poor lady with her trash ball is touching all that…urrrrgghhhh. ‘

While I agree that it’s gross, I’ve got to say, I don’t have much sympathy for her. She looks like an adult, she made the decision to roll a giant trash ball down 14th; she’s going to have to deal with the consequences!
