Wow, Lichtenstein Sculpture is From NYC and Survived 9/11

DSCN8598, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I’ve walked past this sculpture (9th and F outside the Portrait Gallery) dozens of times and just read the plaque. Apparently is was originally located near the World Trade Center but only received a few scratches.

Is This Common?

DSCN8394, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I’ve heard from a few folks that their scooters have been pushed over. I saw this one on Saturday. It totally reeked of gasoline. For the scooter riders out there – first of all, respect, I’ve always wanted one for some reason. But back to the point – have your rides gotten pushed over?

What the Helen of Troy is This?

DSCN8456, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

What did they use this for? Oil? Natural Gas? What time period is this from?  This one looks kinda new.  Is it really expensive to remove them or is it possible that they’re still used?

Book donations for the Friends of the Petworth Library

Petworth Library, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I remember in the past folks had asked if there was any place to donate books. From a reader:

“The Friends of the Petworth Library are accepting book donations for our fall book sale to benefit the Petworth library. We encourage you to donate the following materials: mass market paperbacks, trade paperbacks, DVDs, books on CD, gently used children’s books, hardcover fiction and nonfictions, and magazines. Donations can be dropped off at the circulation desk. If you would like to become a member, please contact Lynda Laughlin (lynda.laughlin@gmail.com) for a membership application. Thanks!”

More Fun With Tree Stumps

DSCN8530, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I told you other folks love tree stumps as much as I do. This is definitely the first tree stump planter I’ve seen. (There was also a second one not seen in the photo.) Well done. The ante for fun with tree stumps has officially been raised.

House of the Day

This house is gigantic. I suppose it may be cut into apartments but I’m not sure. I dig the stone.

A Reader Reports on the New Gas Station at Sherman and Harvard

DSCN8523

“A week or two ago you wrote about businesses on Sherman Ave and asked if anything could be sustained. The Apex had closed along with Coco Libre across the street. Well I’m glad to report that the gas station has reopened as a Chevron. The gas prices are competitive ($1.99 for regular vs $2.19 at a local BP), they sell real food like milk and eggs cheaper than Giant, a staff on duty all the time and they have been diligent about keeping it clean. I thought you might like to do an update as this is the responsible type of business the community needs to support. Oh, and they still carry salty snacks and cigarettes for those old Apex shoppers, just not as much.”

Phenomenal Reader Submitted City Sign

Riggs-Park-Baptist-Church,-Beer-&-Ale

The reader writes:

“I just barely noticed this sign the other day- only because it is on a burned-out church. It’s on the 6900 block of Chillum Place NE. (near Kansas Ave)”

So good! Dang, could’ve been a good caption contest…

Judging New Buildings (and the Back of a Rowhome)

DSCN8580

The building above is located at 1050 K Street, NW. I think it’s pretty cool looking, but I still think I prefer the brick ones. What about you?

I also thought this was a pretty cool back of a rowhome. Anyone ever see one that angles up like that?

You’d never guess it looked like that from the front:

Photos From PoPville

Eritrean dress

I thought this shot by quigley_brown was amazing. He writes:

“A group of women in traditional dress arrive for a wedding at the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church on Irving St. NW Saturday morning.”

Good Deal or Not? I’ve Always Wondered Edition

DSCN8408

This condo is located at 1300 Kenyon Street, NW:

The flier says:

“This light filled 2BR/2BA condo is 1 block from Metro, dining and shopping in Columbia Heights. Gourmet kitchen with granite counters, cherry cabinets, ss appl. and breakfast bar. Cherry HW floors throughout, crown molding, gas fireplace and lots of windows. Brick patio and prof. landscaping. Off street parking space is included”

More info and photos found here.

There are some buildings in the city that I’ve always wondered what they look like on the inside. I’ve been super curious about this one for a while. And while it’s nothing like I expected, it’s pretty amazing. I’m very curious to know what you guys think about the photos? $529,000 sound reasonable?

Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park on Sunday

It never ceases to amaze me how awesome Malcolm X/Meridian Hill Park is. It was packed with folks this beautiful Sunday. I had to shoot some video of the drum circle. People were just so happy it was contagious. In addition to the drums folks were reading, sunbathing, having a picnic, tossing the frisbee. The beautiful life at its best!

And I forgot Tina did a profile last August.

Some Serious Scuttlebutt For Ya – IHOP Coming to Columbia Heights DCUSA?

IHOP, originally uploaded by Sikario.

Welcome to your Monday scuttlebutt that will overjoy nearly half the readership and infuriate the other half. So I had gotten wind of the news a few weeks ago but I was holding off to try and get confirmation from another source. But today a reader sent me:

“FYI, I heard from a fairly good source (though not 100 percent) that IHOP signed a letter of intent to go into DCUSA.”

This email and another source, I think, makes it official scuttlebutt! Does this help dull the pain of the news about Ellwood Thompson grocery store? Any fans of IHOP out there? Think they’ll do well in Columbia Heights?
