Thanks to all who turned out Sat. morning (I know there were a few other clean ups scheduled that day). Thanks, also, to Councilmember Bowser for showing her support. But a special thanks to Cynthia for dealing with the city to get garbage bags and a pick up scheduled. We cleaned from the Metro up New Hamphire Ave to and around Grant Circle including the road, some pocket parks and some side streets. I have to say when I walked down New Hampshire Ave later that night I nearly choked up it looked so good. I know that it will get dirty again, but I think we really had a good showing. Plus all sorts of folks on the road and on the street were thanking us for our efforts. So once again, thanks to all who participated.
Next month I’ll work with some pre-existing groups in Columbia Heights and we’ll have a joint clean up. Details to be announced later in May. More photos after the jump including a very interesting find by one participant… (more…)

On Saturday I posted photos of the damage IMF protesters did to two banks on P Street a few blocks from Logan Circle. In addition to breaking windows the protesters also spray painted some red anti IMF slogans.
Before I went to P Street, I was in Logan Circle and I had noticed that the Park Sign speaking of the circle’s namesake was vandalized. Seeing how it is red paint, I’m wondering if it was the same folks. But what do they have against General Logan?

Thanks to a reader for sending the tip and the above photo:
“There was a 4 person shooting on the unit block of Bryant st NW today (Sunday) @ 200 pm approx. Lots of cameras and there were about 10 police cars. Apparently it was a family argument that went south.”
The Columbia Heights Listserv had a note as well:
“It seems that shots were fired in broad daylight at about 4:20pm on Sunday afternoon. I saw mothers with strollers running in away from what seemed to be 14th and Harvard. Police are currently swarming the area. If anyone has concrete information that can/should be made public, please let the community know.”
And DCist reported earlier a shooting on 14th and W:
“An adult man was shot at around 11:35 p.m. last night (Sat. night) in an incident police are preliminarily describing as “not a random attack.”
Not good news for an MPD “all hands” weekend.

On Friday we learned that Qualia coffeeshop had opened at 3917 Georgia Ave. For those that didn’t have a chance to check them out I thought I’d show you what it looked like. The owner, Joel, told me that they’ll actually be only half time or closed most of this coming week but the grand opening will be announced soon. Not only does the place look great but I’m super happy to report that the coffee was delicious.
More photos after the jump. (more…)

This one was pretty sweet because in addition to the cool tiles they also had some nice paintings on either side.

I think I may have shown this one back in the day, but man it was shining today. Love that double deck balcony.

A buddy of mine called me when I happened to be in Logan Circle to ask if I knew what happened at the PNC bank located on the corner of 14th and P. I ran over to take a look and it was quite a scene. Multiple windows were smashed.
Actually the PNC bank alone had enough glass smashed to fill the back of a pick up truck:
Further west on P Street I found out the Wachovia was hit as well:
Notice the red spray paint above? Well, a worker there told me that the damage took place at 5:30 am and the police caught the vandals. How did they catch them? Well there were cameras. But in addition to that the protesters had fresh red spray paint on their shoes. Beautiful!

This strip is located at 5th and Q Streets, NW (I think). I was struck by the wood up top probably leading out to a roof deck. I kinda dig it. You?

These condos are located at 1728 (left side of photo) and 1730 (right side of photo) New Hampshire Ave, NW:

I’m curious about these two because they are both 1 bed 1 bath, both in super cool buildings, and right next door to each other. 1728 is going for $349,900 and 1730 is going for $379,000. Either seem reasonable? Which do you prefer? Of course one has a roof deck…

Thanks to a reader for sending this disappointing news. DCist is reporting:
“In a press release and message posted to their company blog today, Richmond-based organic grocer Ellwood Thompson’s announced that their planned expansion to the DCUSA development in Columbia Heights is on hold, seemingly indefinitely.”
