Just a quick reminder that the first PoP cleanup will be this Saturday at 10:30am. Let’s meet outside the Petworth metro near the leaf sculpture at the corner of Georgia and New Hampshire.

From yesterday’s comments:
“So where would you suggest a DC neophyte go for a metal/punk scene? I’ve been to Black cat, DC9, Velvet Lounge and still nothing.”
Any metal/punk fans out there?

Thief in the Night, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.
In March we learned of a rash of stolen packages in Columbia Heights. From the CH Listserv it seems the suspect may have been caught do to the work of a good Samaritan:
“Package thiefs have been arrested. At 3pm today I saw the same woman and a guy forcefully open front door of our building and pick up two packages from foyer
I called 911 and followed them for 45 minutes to corner of 16th and Florida where cops finally stopped them. Thiefs took items out of boxes in alley by 1101 then zig zagged many blocks before they realized I was STILL following them. There, they removed some more items before eventually being arrested.
They are being charged with breaking in and entering, mail theft, etc. I will be called to court to act as a witness. Officer stated that thiefs most likely will also receive stay away order for this neighborhood.
By the way, during my pursuit I had to call 911 twice as I did not see ONE police officer from 1101 all the way to 16th and Florida due to fewer police on duty becuase of Emancipation Day(holiday).”
Nicely done. And if you want a good laugh here is the story related to the photo above.

I love the fact that I get tips like this:
“On Havard street, just North of Lanier Place, on the north side of Harvard street, there is an elevated sidewalk. I do not quite understand it, as the sidewalk must be somewhat inconvenient if you live there, but it looks cool, has nice vantage points and is somewhat landscaped. I wonder what the thinking/history was behind it.”
I think this is what the reader was talking about. It really is quite cool. The backside hits the alley behind Irving Hobart in Mt. Pleasant.

“Dear PoP,
I live in Columbia Heights and work in Van Ness, and split my commutes between walking, the H2, and riding my scooter. Unfortunately the construction on Park Road has made my scooter commute miserable! Any idea when they’re planning on being finished?”
Hmm, we addressed this same question back in January. At the time the construction was slated to be completed in February. Clearly work is still being done between Hiatt and at least 16th Street. Anyone know the new time frame? I’ll email Councilmember Graham to see what he knows.

I like how the clay pots and bushes seem to be forming a protective perimeter around the tree in the middle.

This could be a potential re-PoP but I really like the detail up top as well as the curved rooms on the first two floors.

Dang I can’t remember what street this is. Oh well. I’m curious what you think about the one on the left. Do you think it works with the older style one on the right? I think the symmetry of the block looks pretty cool. Thumbs up or down?

The reader writes:
“I frequent past this sign on the way to and from my fiance’s place and thought this would be something you’d like to have on your blog. Sadly, the proclamation on the sign isn’t true… the store has been closed for a couple years now, but I hear that the owner’s trying to open it up again soon. If he is, there’s a LOT of work to be done w the store before he can open it up for business again.
This is on 3rd and M St, NE”
Coldest Beer in Town is among the greatest proclamations I have ever read in our fair city.

Adams Morgan Safeway, originally uploaded by M.V. Jantzen.
Thanks to a reader for sending this DC Mud article with an update on the Social Safeway (1855 Wisconsin Ave, NW) as well as a small update on what they call the “Not So Safeway” in Adams Morgan (which the reader calls the Salvadorian Safeway):
In the meantime, renovation procedures take a much more low-key tact at the “Not So Safeway” at 1747 Columbia Road, NW. That store will remain open when it goes under the knife (as early as early next month) and, although the store will forgo demolition, the end result will be much the same as in Georgetown.
“Under the current situation, [we couldn’t close the store]. We would have liked to, but if we’re not able to that, we’ll do the in-place remodel. It will be a complete interior renovation and decorum upgrade,” said Muckle. “It will look like…our other upgraded Safeways, of which there are now nine or ten in the area.”
We once discussed Safeway nicknames here. While we’re on the topic, anyone know of the renovation plans for the Georgia Ave. Safeway?

This condo is located at 1740 18th Street, NW:
The flier says:
“Pristine condo in prime Dupont. Completely renovated in 2006 with wide-plank maple floors, generous crown mouldings and recessed lighting. Kitchen with granite and stainless. King-size master bedroom with walk-in closet. Second bedroom that can actually accommodate a queen-size bed! Washer/Dryer in unit. Small boutique building in an amazing location. Walk to shops & metro.”
More info and photos found here.
I thought this one would be interesting to look at because it is similarly priced to yesterday’s GDoN. Of course this one is a condo and not exactly in the same neighborhood. Plus this one has two full baths. Does $509,000 seem reasonable?
