Judging Soup

DSCN8254

Hmm, I never noticed this “Soup Man” sign on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. I’m actually a huge soup fan, seriously. Ed. Note: I swear I used to be cooler than this… So how’s the soup here? I’m really imagining a soup nazi type spot. Any fans?

A Look Inside The Allegro Apartments

DSCN8179

Last week we looked at the outside of the newly completed Allegro apartments. I took a tour of the inside on Friday. I have to say, it was pretty amazing. Of course, you pay for amazing. From the outside of 3460 14th Street you can’t tell just how huge the place is. There are two courtyards (at the time still getting their final touches but both will have wifi) and 297 units. Units range from studios ($1525-$1775), one bed, one bath ($1775-$2175), one bed, den, one bath (($1900-$2650), Two bed, two bath ($2450-$2725) plus a series of penthouses (ranging from $2450-$3750). At the moment 2 months free rent and one time $500 common charge are being waved if you move in by May, 31st. There also will be a fitness room, yoga room, billiard room, media room and cyber cafe. There is no pet weight restriction though certain breeds like pitbulls are not permitted. If you’d like to check it out yourself they’ll be having a party Wed. night from 6-9pm.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

Has Ben’s Officially Gotten Too Busy?

DSCN8366, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I’ve been hearing lots of folks talking about this lately. I went a few weeks ago at night (on a Thursday) and the wait wasn’t too bad at all. I mean Ben’s has always been crowded at times. But the last few weekends I have noticed that there have been huge lines snaking around the side during the day. I have never seen that before. So I have to pose the question – has Ben’s gotten too crowded to be a reliable dining/snacking option?

Dear PoP – What’s Up With the Perseus Project?

DSCN8209, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

“Dear PoP,

What’s the status of Perseus Realty’s YMCA project at 14th and W Streets, NW? Has construction started?”

On their Web site it says they have broken ground on Sept. 26, 2008. But from the photo above, taken on Saturday, it is hard to tell if much progress has been made.

Last we heard about this spot, there was a fire here back in January. I’ll email this post to the developers and see if they can give us an update. Do any readers happen to know if the construction is moving along?

Some Pizza Scuttlebutt

IMG_6502, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

After yesterday’s post about Radius at the Ohio on H Street, NE a reader cleared a few things up and passed on some info about Radius on Mt. Pleasant Street, NW. As some commenters previously mentioned it seems the Radius at the Ohio is on hold and it is not clear if that project will go forward.

As for the Radius in Mt. Pleasant, I’m told it has been sold! But apparently it will remain Radius pizza. I’m told it is closing for a few days on Sunday for some renovations. I’m not sure how long “a few days” is but I’ll be sure to post when it officially reopens.

Play Inspired by PoP Post and Comments Was Really Good

photo(2), originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I have to admit when I heard about this play I didn’t really know what to expect. But the students from the Young Playwright’s Theater did a great job. If you commented on this post you would’ve especially liked it. I just wanted to give props to the students for writing a terrific, and more importantly, thoughtful play.

And I didn’t get made fun of too badly.

What the Helen of Troy is This?

DSCN8203, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I actually just thought this looked very cool. Clearly it’s some water valves but is this for the fire department? Does anyone know what’s up with all the different valves, do they just go to different sections of the building. I’m confused.

Door of the Day

Another one for the Art Deco fans. I posted a few very similar to this one but this one on R Street seems to be in the best shape.

Gotta love the castle houses. This one also has a pretty sweet doorway.

What I Thought Was Going To Be a Sweet City Sign Post, But Is Actually Some Development News

DSCN8368

A commenter mentioned that there are tons of sweet city signs on H Street, NE. And indeed there are. I thought this sign was particularly amusing because Ohio is not generally considered the south. But as I was checking out this spot I noticed that there was a permit in the window.

DSCN8370

It seems this spot at 14th and H Streets, NE is slated to return to a functioning restaurant. Apparently it will be called Radius at the Ohio and will be a restaurant with a summer garden and sidewalk cafe. This spot is very close to the great Argonaut restaurant/bar so that section of H Street will be particularly sweet.

Judging New Homes (Cont.)

DSCN8212

We last looked at this home on V Street (just east of 14th Street, NW) just a few weeks ago. But, wow, is it wild to see it change. I had no idea there would be so many windows. Per usual, what do you think of the construction as well as the “fit” on the block?

Good Deal or Not? Mini House With Some Serious Charm Edition

DSCN8221

This house is located at 1814 Vermont Ave, NW:

The flier says:

“Close to Metro and U-Street/Logan, light-filled, condo alternative, updated kitchen, granite countertops, hard wood floors throughout, historic row house with beautifully landscaped front and back patios, two parking spots, custom elfa shelves & lots of great features.”

More info and photos here.

Now this is a small house at 2 beds/1.5 baths but before you judge it you have to take a look at the photos. They seems pretty sweet. Lots of nice detail here. Given the charm and the size do you think $530,000 sounds reasonable for this home?
