Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. Anything good happen this week?

Rave: Beautiful day, I think I’m going to take the afternoon off.

Rant: Kind of bummed about my plans for the weekend. Not shaping up the way I hoped.

  • crazy

Rave: I’m going to try to take my bike out for a spin today. Its going to be a huge challenge since I haven’t been on it for two years (broke both my hands the last time I was on it). Last time I rode, I lived in a completely flat town, so I’ve got a lot of getting in shape to do.

Today’s goal is just to make it to the gas station to properly fill up the tires.

Rant: I can do this on this gorgeous afternoon because I am unemployed with no prospects for a job any time soon.

  • Anonymous

Rant: I complain about my job every week, but its gotten to the point where I’m just about ready to quit. I’m not quite 27 and just yesterday discovered my first gray hair (well, actually its white)…no job is worth this much stress.

Rant2.0: I can’t quit. Rx bills alone would kill me in two months.

    Rave: BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND! FLIP-FLOP WEATHER!

  • Victoriam

Rant: I have 3 leaking faucets that I know I could take apart and fix myself, but I’m just too lazy.

Rave: I have a modest, but recession-proof income, so it would actually be patriotic and economically stimulating, not lazy, to HIRE someone to fix them!

So can anyone recommend a good handy-person? (I actually have dozens of small projects, from re-wiring some lamps to building a little patio.)

  • K Street Last Day

so, i ranted a few months ago about how life-draining my corporate america job was — how I wasn’t a suit at heart and just wanted to do something a little more human.

well, today is my last day. I quit. heck, I’m nervous, but I think this is a good move. Looking forward to what’s next…

Crazy: go to a bike shop and use their free air pump. A car tire pump may explode your tire. City Bikes has free ones to use

beautiful day which hopefully translates into a beautiful evening to hit an outdoor happy hour :)

looking forward to the pop clean up tomorrow morning… hopefully all the posters will put their money where their mouths are and do more than just complain about the litter anonomously!

Oh how I love these random rants/raves… I think I participate in these everytime one comes up!

Rant: It’s soo so so nice out and I’m stuck inside at my job!
    Rave: I have a job.
Rant: The fact that I even have a job should not be a rave. Someone get this stupid economy going.
Rave: Driving up to Philly after work to see the bf.
Rant: Traffic blows on Fridays – I hit DC friday pre-rush hour traffic, Baltimore rush-hour, and Philly’s consistent, all the time, terrible, no good, very bad traffic.
Rave: That I found this blog about a month ago, and I can’t stop reading it! I love every aspect of it!

  • Victoriam

Extra ravey rave – I just saw a Bald Eagle in Rock Creek Park!

  • Sunny Florida Avenue

Counting down the moments till I can go home an mow my (my, as in, I own) lawn for the very first time, stellar moment for me!

  • Anonymous

@ Mal: Suggestion: Amtrak. Or if you wanna go cheap, Chinatown bus.

  • Golden Silence

Rant: I am stuck here at work for another two hours…
Rave: …but then my weekend finally starts!
Second Rave: It’s nice outside today!
Third Rave: HollaBack DC, the new blog chronicling street harassment in DC, is having a blog launch party/happy hour this upcoming Wednesday. Click here for more details.

  • Pennywise

    Victoriam: where?

  • Nichole

Rave: Going to spend the evening around a friend’s firepit with some Square One Organic Cucumber Vodka Collinses.
Rant: This is likely to deplete my supply of said vodka.
Rave: Thus necessitating a visit with my friends from Jersey who can get it in their area, which will likely take place camping next month (double Rave).
Rant: The day has gotten away from me a bit, and I still have 2 cover letters to write and the pups are antsy and want to go outside and play. Shit, I’m antsy and want to go outside and play.

  • Victoriam

The eagle was near Pierce Mill. I’ve seen plenty of hawks in this area – usually around the big field across the street near picnic area #1 but this is the first time for a Bald Eagle. I’m guessing it’s the time of year for roaming and also possibly fish running up the creek, (possibly queing up at the new fish ladder there?)

Anyone have any information on installing rooftop decks on a rowhouse? Cost to install? Return on investment???

  • Pennywise

Cool, thanks. There’s beavers up near Riley Springs Bridge, though I’ve only seen them twice in the last year or so.

  • DCDireWolf

Victoria, email me at thedirewolf@gmail.com for a great home project guy recommendation.

  • Rave: I won an award for my volunteer service at WR
Rave: For the awards ceremony I took the day off it was a beautiful day to do it.

Rant: I’m nervous my effin roommate wont find a tenant for my room and i’m going to get screwed over or dick her over. Its going to be messy either way and it makes me very anxious.

  • Victoriam

Thanks Pennywise – haven’t been up there in a while and that section of the park can be like the frigging nature channel – I’ve seen pheasants (or grouse – I’m not so familiar with those little guys unless they’re roasted) deer, a hawk, turtle and snake on just one walk. (and I do miss the creosote smell of the next bridge up from there) Also, last year there was a big-ass beaver – (like volkswagon size) right near the bottom of beach drive, just where it’s closed off on weekends.

And a rave from my dog – 98 years old in people years – who very nearly caught her 6th squirrel yesterday.

And one more nature pitch – this should be peak weekend for dogwood hill at the arboretum.

  • bogfrog

    Rant:
The secretaries and staff who work in this office are lazy, disrespectful, and they play their music and shriek on the phone and flirt with visiting men and speak an improper form of English all day, every day. Yesterday one of them declined to send a fax for me. (She said, I couldn’t figure out how to make it work. Later she said, the problem was the 202 area code.) These secretaries are unionized. I am ready to sit down and hear them out, but my other 6 coworkers say they’ve already provided feedback through the union hierarchy channels with the only result being more surliness. My coworkers have been living with this laziness and attitude for 8 years and they believe the ladies are working at their highest potential.

  • Rachel

    Rave: I’m in Mexico.
