Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) Coming to DC

May 31st, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Adams Morgan, grocery stores | 26 Comments »

When I got the email saying:

“This weekend I will hit the streets dressed as a tree…”

I wasn’t sure if this was the ramblings of an insane person or a legit cause. Turns out it is a super cool legit cause. Pictured above is Bert Fitzgerald, 27, in Adams Morgan.

He worked on the Holly Tree Farm around Charlottesville VA last summer, and is now organizing this project delivering CSA shares from local Virginia family farms to DC, and partnering with farms that do pastured eggs, grass fed meats, raw milk cow shares, artisan breads and cheeses, local trout, and more.

He says:

“With a CSA (community supported agriculture) the idea is that you put money up front to support the costs of the farm’s growing season, and you get a share of its produce (dozens of different things throughout a season) every week. What we do different is that we deliver to your door, at the time you want it, on Thursday (as opposed to doing drop off points). And we allow people to add a very diverse group of local foods to their orders. If people want to join us we have lots of shares to offer, and they start up this Thursday (going through oct 1), so now’s the time to sign up!”

Definitely making a bit of a statement with this ride, yeah?

It’s the Excalibur!

If Steve McQueen and Dean Martin owned one then it has got to be pretty bad ass.

Turtle Sellers Spotted at 14th and U On Friday

May 31st, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - U Street, Random | 29 Comments »

CIMG0133, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

So last week I received a number of emails about “mini turtles” for sale in Columbia Heights. But nobody took a photo for me… This is why I love twitter! I saw someone’s update said they saw the turtles again. So I begged them to take a photo for me and voila! You can see the small cages on top of the red news box. I asked the twitter user if all three in the photo were selling turtles but she said it was only the guys in white. Pretty wild, yeah? I do fear what happens to the turtles when they grow and are no longer “mini”…

Thanks again to the twitter user for sending the photo!

I can’t remember if I’ve posted this before. I think I’d remember it but it looks pretty new to me. It is from the unit block of W Street, NW in Bloomingdale. I like the folks that put these right on the side of their row houses.

The Gibson Launches Huge Marketing Campaign

May 31st, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars | 18 Comments »

DSCN9601

The Gibson is the cocktail lounge located at 2009 14th Street, NW next to Marvin. Up to now they had purposely stayed away from marketing the spot. That’s why I was stunned to see their door above. So much for flying under the radar anymore.

Seriously, since they’ve been open for 6 months or so – what’s your take on it now? How are the crowds? Does the new outdoor area make it easier to get a table? Any favorite cocktails?

PoP/NCHCA Clean Up A Great Success

May 31st, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in admin, volunteers | 4 Comments »

DSCN9615, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

It was awesome to see so many folks out. Folks from all over DC. It was great to see the Social folks as well. It’s nice to see businesses get involved in these types of events. The picture above is from just one of the pick up spots so we put a good dent in! But more importantly were all the folks from the neighborhood who saw us walking around. I know my little clean up group of three had lots of people thank us for our efforts. I think this is just as important as the actual clean up. So thanks again for all who made the effort to come out. Next month we should have a hundred people! For a little more than one hour it is a great statement to make! Next month is Mt. Pleasant – stay tuned for details.

I’m not sure if you can tell from the photo but the bricks look really interesting on this one. I haven’t similar ones around town. And of course it has a sweet vestibule:

“No Don’t!” – A Scooter vs. Minivan Incident on Upshur (Friday Night)

May 30th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in quality of life | 34 Comments »

IMG_3468, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

From an Eyewitness:

“As I was thinking to myself, “what a nice evening”, I hear the sound of a scooter coming up the 4100 block of 4th Street. I look over an watch two teenage boys joyriding helmetless on a scooter. They slow down for the stop sign, but then pull out onto Upshur in an attempt to cross to the 4200 block without stopping. Then they do stop – in the middle of the street – as I hear one of them shout “no don’t!”

I don’t know if that was said to the scooter driver or to the minivan driver who squealed into the scene and struck the boys on their scooter. Headed west on Upshur, the minivan driver pulled over immediately and stuck her head out of her car and asked, twice, loudly, “Is he okay? Are they alright?” Then she drove off.

Yes, she left the scene, and I can see that becoming the central point to the story. But before we judge her as heartless or mean, as those at the scene already were, I think she was freaked. She just hit two neighborhood boys and seemed shocked and scared. Speeding off, I hope and believe she was headed to a safe spot (home?) to call the cops, rather than face the growing crowd at the scene.

Would the arriving people know that the boys didn’t stop? Would they blame her for their foolishness? And can we feel empathy and sadness for both? The teenagers now headed to the hospital and the driver shaking with fear?”

New To Me – Irvine Contemporary Art Gallery

May 29th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neat Neighborhood Find, Neighborhoods - Logan Circle, art | 2 Comments »

DSCN9355

Irvine Contemporary is located at 1412 14th Street, NW. It’s easy to walk by without realizing it’s an art gallery (as I had done many times) because there is a very unassuming glass front.

DSCN9354

But it is well worth checking out. Currently there is a cool exhibit that has been extended to June 13th of works by Shawne Major.

You can see future exhibitions here. Well worth checking out!

Dear PoP – Do Columbia Height Dining Options Close Too Early?

May 29th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Dear PoP, Neighborhoods - Columbia Heights, Restaurants, Restaurants - Columbia Heights | 23 Comments »

DSCN6681

“Dear PoP,

Have you ever been frustrated that CH practically closes it’s doors at 9pm? I worked last Wednesday night and got off the metro starving at 9:10pm in CH. Everything was closed- Potbelly, Julia’s, Panda Express. I wanted something reasonably healthy and the only thing open for a quick bite was 5 guys. I disappointedly walked home hungry.

Maybe as move folks move into CH restaurants will stay open later? is 10pm too much to ask?!?!”

I suspect some folks may argue whether or not those are healthy dining options… But I’d say it’s not unusual for spots like that to close at 9pm. By 9pm I think most folks are going home, to “proper” restaurants, or bars. Of course it would be nice to have some late night options like a shawarma place. What do you guys think – do CH dining options close too early?

Inspired by a city that’s exploding with style, yet starving for some edge, we’ve transformed the grand, glorious Miami-Beach-like pool into an Oasis of “anything goes.”

There’s something for everyone. From affordable, unfussy parties for singles, swim-freaks, music-geeks and stylistas to Spike’d Sundays (a daytime grillfest with Spike Mendelsohn, of Good Stuff Eatery and Top Chef).

All drinks, all summer, are $5 or less. Capitol Skyline is located at: 10th Street SW, Washington, DC, 20024, just a couple of blocks from the new baseball stadium and minutes from the Navy Yard Metro. Below is our summertime line-up.
