“Dear PoP,
New to the neighborhood. Can’t help but notice how many cars have been broken into along Florida Ave. between 11th and 13th along the south wall of Cardozo. As well as on 11th Street, just to the east of Cardozo. I walk this way every morning to work, and invariably, one or two cars have had their back or front windows shattered. Take a walk down Florida. Window glass is everywhere. Does anyone have any idea whether it’s students or who the culprits may be? Seems unusual the number of break ins, but maybe I’m just being naive to the extent of crime in the neighborhood.”
Holy cow, I walked across Florida Ave and there were at least 8 different spots with broken windows. I get word of the occasional car break in but I’ve never seen so many so closely clustered. Anyone care to speculate? Do people simply leave items in their car in this area? Do you think it’s students?
If I had to guess I’d say it was probably thieves rather than vandals. Has anyone had their car broken into at this spot? Can you confirm if anything was stolen? Notice any other streets in town that have frequent clustered window smashings?
Some more photos of different spots after the jump. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for sending:
“In the alley behind 1500 block of Varnum Street NW.
Luckily, I had my big mean doggy with me.”
Incidentally, can’t you get arrested for shooting someone on your property unless your life is in danger?

Looks like they just need to fill one more person in. Nicely done.

The vegetable garden at the Girard Street Park (a bit west of 14th Street) is looking good:
They even had some cool sculptures made out of old cans:

I’m wondering if this is a residence or maybe a religious headquarters. I just noticed that a cross was placed on what seems like a newly refurbished sorta balcony up top. It’s located at 13th and Euclid and is for sure a great structure whether it’s residential or not.

Well a reader couldn’t wait until Monday so here ya go. How was your experience? I didn’t stay for the mud people this year but my favorite part was still the big 18 wheelers filled with speakers. So good. Submit your photos of the parade via email or to the PoPville flickr pool here.
This year the street was more closed off than last year but after a while the barricades were crossed.
I’m not sure what part of the caribbean these folks were representing:
Lot of amazing costumes of course:

marking bullets, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.
A reader writes:
“There was a shooting on my block last night around 4am. A guy was shot in the leg and several cars got bullet holes or busted windows. There were eight shots, fairly random. No idea what caused it or what happened. After hearing the noise, I went to the window and saw nothing–no fleeing people or cars. The guy who was shot was half way down an alley when the cops found him.
No shots went into houses. Neighbors who have lived here fifteen years are saying that nothing like this has happened on our street in their time here.”
Most “street art” is not actually in the street, but these are. Somewhere between Caspar the Friendly Ghost and The Scream, these poor guys have apparently been run down by rush hour traffic and left to molder in the crosswalks, the White Guy at the SW corner of the Connecticut/S/Florida conflagration and the Yellow Guy in the west crosswalk at Connecticut and R. I assume it’s a commentary on traffic’s menace to pedestrians, but maybe they’re just for fun.
Anyone else see these in other spots around town?

We judged the actual building, located at 1515 15th Street, NW (by P Street), back in October 2008. But the Metropole has recently come under new management and I was invited to tour the inside. Since I never took a tour last time, I thought I’d snap some photos. There are 90 units in the building and the prices have been adjusted when McWilliams Ballard took over in mid-May. Prices range anywhere from $399,900 to $1,499,900. There are 1 bedrooms, 1 bedrooms with dens, 2 bedrooms and 2 bedrooms with dens, and penthouses with terraces.
I took tons of photos which I’ll post after the jump but what I think is of particular note is that many of these units are two levels with huge windows and a very open feel. Also the kitchens and bathrooms were really high end. I’m told they are in the process of updating their Web site which you can find here. If you’ve been curious what the units look like you can check them out after the jump. (more…)

Wayan writes:
“Its a hot summer day and you’re hungry. Want burgers and hot dogs served by DC’s finest? Then check out the impromptu BBQ going on a Grant Circle and Varnum Streets NW right now (1-3pm). Free food with the neighbourhood cops. Not a bad way to spend a Friday.”
