DC Metro Train, originally uploaded by Isaac Gallery.
“D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said one train was on top of the other train.
This is “developing into a mass casualty event,” Etter said. “We’re expecting a number of injuries. We’re not aware of any fatalities at this point.”
Hearing that it is a mass casualty event is very scary news. I hope to report more as info becomes available.
UPDATE: From AlertDC
“Metro reports that 2 train collided and one train is on top of the other train. Metro reports massive injuries at this time. The green line and the red line are affected. Further information to follow.”
UPDATE2: @http://twitter.com/cnnbrk confirms one fatality.
UPDATE3: Photo of crash can be seen here: http://twitpic.com/84vsw
UPDATE4: NBC Washington Reports:
“Passengers are currently still trapped in the trains; emergency workers are using tools to cut them from the wreckage.”
UPDATE5: Here is a very scary photo of the incident.
UPDATE6: NBC Washington has video here.
UPDATE7: Mayor Fenty says 4 fatalities, worst disaster in metro history.

This looks like it could be cool cool. Well, the “About” section on their Web site is a bit questionable:

Well this is the nicest Dentist sign I’ve ever seen. Then again Phelps Place is a pretty sweet block. In addition to the cool sign they’ve also got a pretty great lawn decoration that really speaks to me:
This is a pretty cool corner at 20th and Florida Streets NW. This cool building is right across the street. But I like the one featured today as it kinda reminds me of a Mexican villa. What do you think thumbs up or down? Anyone know what the apartments are like inside?

This condo is located at 1617 12th Street, NW:
The flier says:
“Excellent opportunity to own this renovated condo in sought after Logan Circle. Features Stainless Steel Appliances, recessed lighting, 9′ ceilings, central cd/intercom, pergo floors, and more.”
Sadly there are no photos but more info can be found here. Assuming the place is renovated does $500,000 sound reasonable for a 2 bed 1 bath in this location?
Now I know one reader is offended when I post homes/condos that are under contract but, well, I still think it’s interesting. Do you guys think GDoN is useful if a unit is under contract? Amazingly the first five houses/condos I was going to put up today ended up being under contract. (As I said I walk around and snap photos of interesting units with for sign sales out front, I don’t know until I plug it into red fin whether or not it is under contract.) Anyway, the unit above is in a great location at 2008 16th Street, NW. More info and photos can be found here. I was stunned to see it for sale for $230,000. I suppose that’s why it’s under contract in under 7 days…

If any of you wandered past Eastern Market over the weekend, you saw that the temporary indoor market hall was closed for business. This is actually fantastic news because last week the temporary market closed down to transition back to the renovated permanent market! The vendors are using this time to move back into their old (improved) stalls, and to do some

There’s was lots of scuttlebutt about this place located on 11th Street between Monroe and Park Streets NW. First we heard it was going to become a furniture store and then a tapas restaurant. Well it turns out it will become a restaurant. The alcohol application says it will become a new tavern with American fare. There will be a 75 person occupancy with a possible sidewalk cafe and perhaps a DJ at times. The trade name is Local 11.
I’d be pretty psyched about the sidewalk cafe. What do you guys think – sounds good?

“Dear PoP,
I like your posts on sculptures in front of buildings and homes around DC. There is one abstract sculpture that has frequently piqued my interest, because I can’t figure out what it is supposed to represent. It’s near Dupont on Hopkins Street, which is one of those little side streets that’s only one block long.
My best interpretation is: headless orange giraffe. I suppose it can be the mark of good art that this sculpture defies definition and makes the viewer think. But if you’re looking for more sculptures to post about, I am curious how you and your readers would interpret this sculptural Rorschach test.”
Hmm, I’m gonna say this sculpture reminds me of a dancer. What do you guys think? Does it speak to you?

Thanks to a reader for sending. It turns out the event was sponsored by Red Bull.
Side Note: I had received some Scuttlebutt that the space was going to become a bar/restaurant with outdoor seating. Sadly, I’ve been told those negotiations are no longer being pursued.
So I’m glad to see the space is getting good use.

I did a double take when I walked past this tile in Mt. P. It’s just so randomly placed. And of course randomly awesome.
