Photos From PoPville/What in the Helen of Troy is This?

SW DC. 4 of 8.

Here is another from a series of “SW DC” photos by lmno.p who writes, “While taking this one, two undercover cops posted up on the corner and watched.”

So what in the Helen of Troy is this a photo of?

Submit your photos via email or to the PoPville flickr pool here.

  • Well, of course the cops are going to show up. That’s the Soylent Green Factory.

  • Michael

Those look like combustion turbine natural gas power plants to me. The electrical switchyard gear in the background to the right supports that conclusion, as does the fact that the police were suspicious. The metal parts sticking up are for air intake and exhaust.

That’s where undercover cops are manufactured. Now it makes complete sense, doesn’t it?

Ever see the movie “Brazil”? Looks like it’s from that – a post modern, possibly post-apocalyptic depressing world. Yay.

Or may be they’re rockets designed to move the axis of the earth so DC becomes the center of the universe.

  • Dan

Michael’s right. Natural gas turbines are often used to provide additional power for peak-load conditions (i.e., summer afternoons when everyone has the AC on). I don’t know anything about these particular units, though.

Here’s it on google maps, looks like it is electrical

  • Dan

Yep, and it looks like Pepco wants to shut it down by 2012. Here’s a more detailed description: “Buzzard Point station consists of two banks of oil-fired combustion turbines,
(“CT”), the Buzzard Point East Bank and Buzzard Point west Bank that are located in
Washington, D.C. Each bank consists of 8 CTs and each CT has a 16 MW name plate
capacity rating. The total capacity rating of the Buzzard Point Station, which was built in
    1968, is 256 MW.”

Pepco’s 2009 Summer Reliability Report can be found here (pdf): http://tinyurl.com/kmjwpk

I’m increasingly interested in the large power plant next to it. The description of Buzzard Point only seems to include the peaking units. I might be back with more info as I dig it up.

    …fascists…

  • Dan

OK, last post: this pdf (http://tinyurl.com/kqnjg2, page 19) has details about the larger power plant, built in 1933 and decommissioned in 1983. It is now a historic landmark. The pdf has some nice photos and a history of the plant, too.

It’s part of a Pepco plant of some kind, I work sort of near by. There are a lot of signs on the nearby building about survelliance, and no pictures etc so that’s probably why the undercover cops were giving this guy a hard stare….

  • As lmno.p – let me say there were no “no photo” signs – just “report suspicious behavior” signs. Lugging a 6×7 medium format camera with a shift lens that weighs more than I do may be a bit suspicious.

  • T.n

    Soylent Green are people!!!!!

  • u street girl

Oh I’m sure where you were there were no photo signs but I’m 95% sure I’ve seen them on the building in the complex, the Buzzard Point building I think, with the barbed wire over it – I remember because I thought “damn that’s cool I should take a picture of that” and then seeing the no photos sign and being bummed.
