One of my favorite places is robyn’s house, where you can pick up large blocks of cheese and carry them back to your home country. You hear that “wooden dome with no nails” guy? :) You forgot to mention that homoerotic thing where the freshman naval academy guys try to, um, mount that pole thing with hardly any clothes on. IN THE NAVY! Duh duh duh duh duh-dut-duh!

  • Ingmar

HI I AM GOING TO GO TO THAT DOME AGAIN. IT IS A WOODEN DOME AND IT IS THE LARGEST WOODEN DOME EVER BUILT IN THE COUNTRY WITH NO NAILS. I HEARD THIS THE FIRST TIME I VISITED THE WOODEN DOME AND I SAW A CRAB. THE CRAB HAD A BABY AND THE BABY CRAB LOOKED AT ME.

  • Park View

Perhaps its just me, but I’m amused that a write up on Summer journeys has an image where a business is decorated for Christmas.

That said, Annapolis has always been a fun day trip and I’m always up for going back.

  • Prince Of Petworth

@Park View Hahaha. Yeah, I had to find a photo randomly from flickr and I just really liked this one.

  • CUHBF

picnic on st johns campus in the fall. cant beat it.

  • EdTheRed

Mills Wines & Spirits, at the bottom of Main St. That place rules. At first blush, it seems a bit pricey, but ask one of the salespeople to put together a mixed case for you at whatever price point you want, and watch the discounts start flying. I was up there last week and by the time they were done ringing me up, I was paying only 2/3 of the sticker price for a case. Plus their staff really knows their stuff, so their recommendations are always top notch.

Annapolis also has the largest collection of pre-civil war buildings anywhere in the US. So if you’re into colonial architecture, there really is nowhere better.

You can also rent a sailboat, which is incredibly fun. (Annapolis is the sailing capitol of the US, or so they claim)

I love Cantler’s, but unless you like crabs at 10am be prepared for a long wait! There are other great crab houses around Annapolis without the long lines. Mike’s is great – http://www.mikescrabhouse.com/

  • Park View

@ Pop … no worries. Its a good image, and it made me smile. Not an easy task when I’m at work.

  • K

Boatyard Bar & Grill. The best neighborhood restaurant on the planet. I feel privileged to have something so cool just a couple of blocks from my house. http://www.boatyardbarandgrill.com

Cantlers beats Mike’s hands down, even though the wait is often awful, Cantler’s uses local crabs. Mike’s always–year round–ships ‘em in from the Gulf.

If you’re visiting by car and want to grab a lunch on your way in to eat by the water, far and away the best options in all of Annapolis are:

-Giolitti Deli – Italian sandwiches, sides and meats that beat anything I’ve yet found in DC http://www.giolittideli.com/

    and

-Chris’s Charcoal Pit – CASH ONLY – unbelievable Gyros and baklava, yummy fries http://www.chrischarcoalpit.com/joomla/index.php

If you don’t want people to think of Annapolis as just a cute little town, then don’t post such a COMPLETELY ADORABLE photo! Eee, so charming, now I must must must go see. :) Great photo pick.

  • Jen @ Primed4Design

That is a beautiful photo you posted-good catch though that it’s a christmas photo for a summer post Park View, haha. Oh well. :) I grew up in Calvert, where the was REALLY NOTHING TO DO, so we always went to Annapolis since it was 20 min. away. I agree the mall has seriously gotten out of hand! I’ve only been there 1x in the past 12 years, traffic is madness. I LOVED the consignment shop/goodwill on the right side of West St. as you go down the to harbor. You could find the greatest things if you looked hard enough. My sister got a brand new $300 pair of shoes for $20. All the “hand me downs” in the Annapolis area were practically new! I love RamsHead Tavern and the Storm Bro’s icecream also.

@ Ingmar…ha ah ahah ah aha ha haaaaa

  • Waterboy

That should have been “great food”

  • JohnnyReb

Also, the Merlyn Statehouse is the oldest continuously-inhabited capital building in the US. Their is a Tiffany-designed stained glass panel in there as well.

I’m too lazy to Google it, but Annapolis is the only city – or one of the very few cities – in America built using a Jacobean plan. Something to do with the way the city radiates from the traffic circles.

  • JohnnyReb

And I meant “there” and not “their…”

  • Cornelius

The dome is amazing! I was a state senate page and lived in Annapolis for a while and that has to be my favorite experience from high school. We got to write out names up in the dome along with the graffiti from the previous 250 years. Plus there are fully preserved bird skeletons in the rafters.

Some other cool places to check out are Paca House for an amazing revolutionary-era garden and Potato Valley Cafe right on State Circle. http://www.potatovalley.net/.

  • sandy

    Eastport is cool.

  • Andrew

I like to pronounce it “anna-pollis” or “anna-nap-polis.” People get mad.

  • StubsDC

I hear the decorations at Christmas are great though. I keep wanting to go up and stay in a cute B&B. Anyone have a favorite?

  • Anonymous

In Annapolis, I think Chick and Ruth’s Delly is the best, but that’s a matter of taste, with cheery yellow and orange.

  • grew up in Annapolis

Don’t go to Pussers its an overcrowded hotel bar (not kidding, it is in the Mariott) that seems to be hosting a constant high school reunion.

hit Middleton’s, Dock Street, Federal House or someplace like that.
