NGA and Natural History both have old school phonebooths with closing doors. So good to be able to shut out the world for a few fleeting minutes.

Columbia Country Club has some antediluvian wooden ones like this on the ground floor of their clubhouse (near the “Grill”). I know y'all are going to think this is weird or stalker-like, but there is an individual I want to call to see if he answers the phone at his address. I can't call him from home or my cell as everyone has caller id and I don't want to block it. The reason the pay phones are being removed is that they just aren't making any money for the companies, in this age where most of us have cells. I wish there were more payphones. But noteworthy was a line of 10 pay phones outside the restroom. I couldn't help but imagine when, if ever, 10 people would simultaneously flock to the pay phone bank. However, I do have a sentimental spot for payphones and push dial phones for that matter. It wasn't that long ago that nobody had cell phones. Life was very different, almost more romantic in the classical sense. Viva la payphone!
