Double Red Ripe Tomatoes, originally uploaded by Wayan Vota.
I wanted to give an update to PoP readers who might be wondering how my garden is coming along after the Great Lettuce Harvest. First off, as you can see, my tomatoes are already coming in, and I’ll be having a bumper crop this year. While they were too late to go with the lettuce, I also have crazy numbers of cucumbers already ripe for a tom/cuke salad.
Now I do have a question for PoP readers: what do I do with my banana & jalepeno peppers? I ask because my wife does not like thinks hot and spicy, though I do. So is there a dish that I can make with these that will satisfy us both?
I hope all the other urban gardeners are just as lucky.

awesome. thumbs up. cities are supposed to be different and crazy like this. if i wanted...
Looks cool. With Comet across the street, that gives that little stretch of Connecticut...
Hideous. pure and simple!
Eh, maybe? Depends on what you like. It does have central A/C - huge plus. But there are...
I walk past this every day and just notice how large the gate is.
But I love the...
I have my tomatoes in barrels in the backyard. This week squirrels have gotten my two biggest, most promising ones. How do I keep them away?
make squirrel pot pie with a nice tangy tomato sauce..mmmmm…squirrel…..
For the best squirrel free gardening, I use the patented “Taxi Dog” – she always keeps my back yard vermin free.
Stuff the banana peppers w/ sweet Italian sausage and cover with fresh mozz and marinara. Because you’ll have removed the seeds to stuff, the peppers will be only mildly spicy and 100% delicious.
You can throw some extra spice on yours by leaving the seeds in your peppers, or making a spicier marinara for yourself. Or using hot sausage in your stuffing.
Last year when I had tremendous numbers of tomatoes and jalepenos I made my own salsa, one with mango, and one with peach, they were awesome!! This year I tried to grow my own cilantro to help with the same idea, but it has faltered recently and now I will have to replant cilantro, or just do store bought… oh well.
it’s been a great year for gardens. i’ve had the most remarkable tomato plants–they are chest-high (i’m 6 ft tall) and i’ve already pulled a dozen beautiful, unblemished, fist-sized ripe red tomatoes over the past two weeks. I’ve had peppers for more than a month, zucchini has reached critical mass, finished up the english peas a couple of weeks ago, and cooked the first “mess” (my grandmother’s measuring unit) of green beans last week. Also had a bumper crop of cherries in may, and looking forward to figs in about 4-6 weeks.
now if i just had the space for corn and some melons…
Markus: Deer netting.
Jim: Our corn is doing well in a 1′ x 4′ planter (sq. ft. method). There is only room for 16 actual stalks, but a few of ones we’ve planted seem to be doing well so far (about 5′ tall). Zucchinis have gone wild here too.
pickle the banana peppers and use them in tuna salad for lunches. Or just chop them up and use raw as is. Finely chop the jalopenos and put them in everything – spoon them into your salsa (not hers), salads, eggs, quesadillas, etc. lucky you!
Odentex:
hope your corn comes through. i’ll have to settle for the farmer’s market for corn and okra.
i built an arbor housing blackberries and an 8 x 12 ft raised bed in my back yard that i have jammed with the previously mentioned vegetables. but my back yard is out of room for anything more. i’m actually considering moving some stuff (zucchini or peppers) to the front yard next year so i can plant a row of corn in the back.
jim, take pics and and send us the link please!
weve had good luck with squash and cucumbers so far, and will have a lot of tomatoes by the end of this week i hope…now the peppers and watermelons just have to catch up
To build on Nichole’s idea, that woman who does Italian cooking on PBS has a stuffed banana pepper recipe. She uses ground meat and rice, and seers them before covering them with tomato sauce and simmering. So yummy.
That’s Lidia who does all the good eye-talian cooking on PBS (and not a little bit of drinking too).
We also have happy corn about 5-feet high in raised beds. I’ve heard that you should try to plant in clusters rather than long rows for best pollination.
I pulled a bunch of beets and carrots last weekend and am expecting tomatoes and cukes this weekend. Anybody know what a pole bean does when it reaches the top of the pole?
here’s my garden about 2 weeks ago:

Looks great Jim! I am so envious of the garage, you lucky git.
yeah, the two car garage is a pretty nice feature, even if it does need some cosmetic work (or more).
