New Wisconsin Avenue Giant – Capturing Signs for Posterity

DSCN2048

This building is located on Wisconsin Ave between Macomb and Newark. I’ve always liked the painting on the old C.C. Murphy Building. Many have heard that a new Giant will be anchoring this spot. Here’s a rendering of what it could look like in the future:

There’s lots of info at the Wisconsin Avenue Giant Web site.

Well This is an Odd Sign

DSCN1993

This was posted to the window on the pizza place on U Street between 13th and 14th (near the sweet new murals). Was there an incident (dang can’t remember the name of this spot near Polly’s) at this pizza spot that I haven’t heard about?

For Those That Love Their Children Books

DSCN2012

The Stanford in Washington Art Gallery, located at 2655 Connecticut Avenue, NW; is showing an exhibit on the drawings of Eric Carle. When I showed this tattoo from the children’s book, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, folks were remembering a few of their favorite children books. Eric Carle is behind the classic the Very Hungry Caterpillar. It’s free – Hours: 9:00

Photos From PoPville

yummy

This antagonizing photo was taken by cacophony76. I don’t know why cacophony would taunt me like this, for my hatred of squirrels is well known. Oh well, I’ve decided to re-title this photo – “Know thy Enemy”.

Judging Restaurants – Tackle Box

DSCN2083

Tackle Box is located at 3245 M St., NW. I’m a huge fan of lobster and was excited to see a sign here for lobster rolls. You can see the whole menu here but the lobster rolls go for $19. So my questions are: How is the lobster roll? Any other items of note? Is $19 too expensive for a lobster roll? Any other spots in DC to get a lobster roll? What’s your overall impression of this place – thumbs up or down?

Where’s the Best Dessert Spot In Town?

free cupcake!
Photo by PoPville Flickr User annejuliet

In yesterday’s discussion about Locolat Cafe a reader requested a discussion about the best dessert spots in town. I think the reader is talking about a sit down spot. So where’s your favorite sit down (cafe type) dessert spot in town?

PoP Preview – G2 Restaurant and Lounge

DSCN2026

Back in Dec. ’08 we looked at G2 when it was a deli. There was always supposed to be a lounge upstairs, but various permitting issues delayed the opening. It appears that those issues have now been taken care of. I spoke with owner, Sampson who has owned the building 3 years, who told me that he hopes to open this coming Saturday. The downstairs, formerly a Blimpie’s before it was a deli, will now be a restaurant featuring a potpourri of cuisines including Mexican, Italian, Ethiopian and American fare. There will also be tvs where you can watch sporting events.

DSCN2025

The upstairs will house the lounge. I think it looks pretty good.

DSCN2020

In addition to a regular lounge there will special event evenings including Jazz night, Ethiopian music, Latino music, and an open mic night including comedy. I think this has the potential to be pretty sweet. I’d love to check out some Ethiopian music. I can see that being very, very cool.

Couple more photos of the lounge after the jump. (more…)

Reader Snaps a Great Photo in Chinatown

IMG00202, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

“Dear PoP,

Something we can all take solace in seeing once in a while…

A DC Parking enforcement vehicle, illegally parked, and getting towed by a parking tow truck in front of the Verizon Center today.”

I hope it wasn’t broken down and was really towed because it was illegally parked. Well, that’d just be the coolest.

PETA Protest Outside McDonald’s on 14th and U Last Saturday

Apparently McDonald’s treats their chickens poorly. Besides free range aren’t all chickens treated poorly?

But hey, how could I not take a photo of a chicken costume. It’s impossible not to…

Dear PoP – Does Columbia Heights Have The Highest Concentration of Peace Corps Volunteer Alumni?

Peace Corps. Poster, originally uploaded by Jrish85.

“Dear PoP,

Columbia Heights and/or the zip code 20010 has the highest concentration of former Peace Corp Volunteers than any other part of the US/World.

I can’t remember where I heard it, but now a friend of mine is asking if there is a source other than myself as to the validity of this claim. Would you or any of your readers be able to help point to some source that could confirm/deny this?”

I’m sure there are some former peace corps folks out there. Can anyone confirm this?
