This is from Jess, 25, who got it done at Jinx Proof in Georgetown. It’s a peacock feather and I think it came out very cool looking.

This headless/torso-less child just creeped the hell out of me. I don’t even know if something was planted in here if it would be any less creepy…

I liked the eye on the metal slab here. Not sure if you can tell but the inside is a shell and drops straight down, you can sorta see at the bottom of the photo.

I’ll give you three guesses to guess which neighborhood this house is from. It also has a best spot for a morning cup of coffee or mojito. And oddly/happily it had tons of bull sculptures. You can see one peeking out in the above photo. Close ups after the jump. (more…)

Not sure how I missed this one but La Morenita Restaurant has opened up at 3539 Georgia Ave., NW. I was told they’ve been open for about 6 months. Anyone check them out yet? If so how do the pupusas rank?

“I’m writing because my dog, Olive, got loose this morning (Wed. 9/23) and ran off in Columbia Heights, possibly running down into LeDroit Park. I’m hoping you can post these photos and description.
Olive is a 2 year old, small/medium (25 lb), black and white border collie-corgi mix. She looks like a border collie with the body type and short legs of a corgi.
Olive is wearing a yellow flowered collar with tags and is micro-chipped. Her tags include my phone number so I’m praying that someone finds her or just spots her and calls me at 330-554-3658. We are posting flyers in the area with this information.
She slipped out of the house this morning on the corner of Sherman and Kenyon and ran south down Georgia Ave. She was spotted mid-morning around S street and Florida Ave and may have been spotted again at U and 1st. She may still be in this area or hopefully she is making her way back home towards 3214 Sherman Ave, near Harriet Tubman Elementary School.
We love Olive very much and will happily give a cash reward to anyone that can help bring her home. She is skittish with strangers, so approaching her slowly would work best. Cheese is her favorite treat and may help coax her.”

What can I say? I was blown away by the Woodland-Normstone Terrace neighborhood. This construction site was wild? What do you think of the style – thumbs up or down? Or too early to tell? For those curious the architect is Michael Marshall.

Ugh, this whole process has been a lesson learned for me. This will be the last word. Anyway, I am retracting my retraction of the original story. I have received word from someone in the know, off the record, that they are indeed closing. Also many folks have emailed me saying that they have been told either on the phone or in person that Rumberos is closing. I consider this a sad development and wish the owners and staff the best of luck in the future.

The flier says:
“NEW PRICE! Elegance, privacy, an acre of land & 1920s craftsmanship combine to make this residence a sophisticated in-town estate. Features include very high ceilings, ornate plaster moldings, herringbone oak floors, stucco exterior, multiple fireplaces and terraces. The home offers large entertaining rooms, excellent bedroom space, staff quarters w/ sep kitchens, 7-zone HVAC, and a pool.”
More info found here and a virtual tour found here.
Ok, while previously I have shown some Cinemax style house porn this one is of the full XXX variety. You have to see the virtual tour. You can barely tell it is that opulent from the street. Of course, this is from the new (to me) neighborhood of Woodland-Normstone. If you’ve ever wondered how the top .00001% live – here it is. Unbelievable. And there’s been a serious price cut. It was originally on the market for $14,600,000 but has come down to the more reasonable $10,750,000…

The Greene Turtle is located at 601 F Street, NW. From time to time folks ask me where is a good spot to go before an event at the Verizon Center. Some folks have mentioned this spot. I’ve never been but wonder what folks think of this spot? Is it just massively overrun with tourists or is it a decent sports bar?

From an email:
“Think you could help us out? I am the Legal Director at a great local non-profit called WEAVE, Women Empowered Against Violence. WEAVE providers legal, counseling, and emergency services to survivors of domestic violence. It is one of the few organizations in the country that provides all of these services within one organization. We have one of four attorneys in the country who specializes in working with LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence. Sadly, WEAVE is on the verge of closing its doors. There has been some recent media coverage:

Also, there is a happy hour fundraiser tomorrow night:

Please do what you do best and help spread the word so that we can keep doing what we do! www.saveweave.org.”

A reader sent in these beautiful photos of the pond in RCC Cemetery. For those not familiar with the cemetery you can see my first PoPtrekker on it here. It is located at Rock Creek Church Road, NW, and Webster Street, NW in Petworth.

Thaitanic II is the newest restaurant coming to Columbia Heights. It is located at 3462 14th Street, NW in the retail space of the Allegro apartments. One of the owners said they hope to open this weekend. They are shooting for Saturday, but it looks like that’ll be tight. But it is possible that they may finish the final touches by Saturday. If not, they’ll surely be open shortly after.
A few more photos after the jump. Any fans of the original Thaitanic out there? (more…)
