It’s an artistic choice, just like any other.
Does anyone paint black and white oil paintings?
I don’t see the point of comparing photography to oil painting, but since you asked, yes. It’s called Grisaille.

Removing color from composition forces your eye to see repetition in patterns, lines, etc.
For me, black and white works here because your eye sees the multiple stacks of books on the left and the contrast of the clutter on the right along with the horizontal lines of the brick. Adding color would confuse the eye and cause the viewer to be distracted by labels, book spines, the color of her tanktop etc.

That picture dos not have salma hayek in it, therefore like all heyek-less pitcures, it is aesthetically worthless.

Black and white photos have more character. They are more artistic since you have to play with the light and shadow.

Answer:
No. You are the only one here who claimed it was hip or artistic. Clearly it’s time to raise the revolutionary banner of art fascism. Kill kill kill! Arm the Cavity Creeps and storm the gates of the Hirshhorn Museum! We shall roast our evening meal over the burning cinders of provocative art and pick our teeth with the bone-shards of beatniks!
