A few weeks ago we learned that construction will start in November. Thanks to a reader for the word that the signs have gone up. I know some folks would’ve preferred a more dense development like retail on the first floor and apartments above it. It seems that would’ve made a lot of sense. But I have to be honest, I’m happy to be getting a CVS nearby. Especially since I sold my car…

Does anyone know the reason why no apartments were put on top? Seems like a waste..

I also am excited about this arrival.

Probably a lack of financing/credit. It is a waste, but it is better than a vacant lot.

The city should have come up with a usage for the space that was more temporary — like the parking lot/art gallery where the convention center is. Or the art pavilions that where smack dab in the middle of Chicago’s loop for the better part of a decade on an empty lot. Waiting for the best possible use allows time to develop something creatively. Building the wrong type of building there. And a one story convenience drug store (and good god, does DC have enough CVS? They are like weeds) in that space is the wrong type of building. And it will be there for 30+ years. If you accept second best, it’s what you get. DC needs to get out of the thinking that it has to build whatever its offered. This isn’t 1991.

  4. @ Christopher – there is NOTHING remotely like a CVS serving that neighborhood currently. The closest drug store is the one on 14th and Irving. That lot has also been vacant for many years.

While it would’ve been better to have a mixed use building with the CVS on street level, this is good news. Have you ever tried to get a script filled at the Safeway? – they never have what you need! I look forward to not having to get over to 14th St when I’m barely able to get out of bed (and no car).

I am very excited to have it. As anon said, there is no good druug store nearby, and being able to stop after coming off the metro is a huge plus. I also look forward to all teh extra foot traffic the store will create. As for density, I believe the footprint is too small. If I recall correctly, there is not even room for an elevator in that small footprint, or CVS would have likely tried to go up another story to get more square footage.

    Yaayy!!!! I’m excited.

The site used to be a gas station and the soil borings really smelled of petroleum. In order to put up a high rise you would need piers which would require site remediation and that would be more $$$ in cost than in return.

I was hoping for a Duncan D. / Baskin Robbins, but I will take it.

The derelict Marios pizza could still make a fine Duncan D!

I’m delighted — CVS will be a good grocery option (hard to find skim milk in this neighborhood, other than at the Giant).

Yes only carries organic skim milk — it costs $6.99 and has a completely different taste.

Though a CVS would serve the neighborhood need, for some reason, it seems like they also tend to attract a seedy element. They often get robbed and have “characters” just loitering around the entrances for no good reason.

However, as with a lot of the other CVS’s in the nearby area, it will most likely have an off-duty MPD officer there for security, which may help . . .

@bogfrog – try Rock Creek Market (Rock Creek Church and Warder).

CVS is by far one of the most miserable, mismanaged chains in the DC area. I wish it were going to be a Rite-Aid or a Walgreen’s instead, as i live right down the block.

While there seems to be a CVS on every corner in DC, there really isn’t any good option for the people that live in this area. You gotta go all the way down to 14th and irving or a mile up georgia ave to one of the worst CVSs ever. It will be nice to be able to walk to this one.

Yes! has filled a huge need, but it does kind of suck paying a bunch of money for mundane essentials things like trash bags. CVS will make it that much easier to never set foot in Stinky Safeway again.

It’s a good sign for the neighborhood. Now about that bank branch/ATM???

  16. Trubs

There is bank branch/ATM about 2 blocks south of the Petworth metro. It is a B of A on the corner of Georgia and Otis.

  17. Petworth Newbie

It’s the wrong direction for me. Ugh, I am so lazy.

  18. Trubs

    Totally understandable!

  19. Bitter Elitist

    I second Walgreens or RiteAid

  20. @ bogfrog – I second that about the Yes Milk – expensive and tastes like grass —

As for Rite Aid – I’ve seen the one on U Street – talk about seedy!

Any news on whether it will be 24 hours or not?
