After last week’s GDoN house porn a few readers threw down the gauntlet and dared me to find one worthy of the title house porn. Well, I have answered and answered with vigor… Seriously, this house is so wild, I couldn’t believe I just stumbled upon it. It is interesting to note that it, and the next door neighbor, (see photo below) are two very modern houses within an old school block. But back to the house itself – what do you think of it both inside and out? What’s your favorite feature? It’s yours for $2,495,000.

  1. love these modern houses for they afford you something you don’t get in an old wardman. A TON of light. and I wouldnt mind hangin out in that hot tub either

I used to live over there, and that is where the house collapsed in ‘03. That’s probably why the new houses are so different from the others on the block.

Oh, I’m so happy I live in CH now!

Love it! Weird staging with the fake ice in the sink though. I’ve had to do that when I’ve thrown parties in hotel suites, but I’m assuming having to throw the beer into the bathroom sink while entertaining isn’t exactly an enticement for the potential home buyer.

  4. ontheDCline

Like the house, but I personally think the dinning room space is way small as well as the “balconies”. Didn’t care too much for the guest bathroom tub either but the house is cool too bad I don’t have the 2+ mil.

  5. Pennywise

That is where Sprockets dance, no? Ja!

  6. House is cool. Probably not 2.5M worth of cool, but cool. It sort of speaks to a very limited audience, however, and definitely wouldn’t be the type of place in which I’d have interest were I looking at that price point. The 30-ft vaulted ceiling in the living room alone robs you of two extra rooms on the upper floors, though I suppose that’s the point. Also, I’m somewhat surprised that there was no roof deck built above the master suite, what with the apparently flat roof up there.

I’m just going to venture a guess that it goes for significantly lower — 200-300k off list, at least.

  7. Bitter Elitist

dig the glass cabinets, floors and light.

  8. Luddite

Oh sure it’s great house porn and the staging is magnificent. Pity it’s overpriced by $1 million dollars.

  9. WDC

$2.5M and can’t even manage a proper dining room? The one major change I’d make if I had a ton more money would be to entertain more. So no thank you.

And what’s with the ice in the bathroom sink? Is it for use as a urinal? I don’t get it.

The back yard is cool, though. I like the use of diagonals to create planting spaces.

  10. Goot Lemmon

I love this place but it’s hard not to call it overpriced. You could probably find something similar for the same money in a more desirable neighborhood. Nothing wrong with Burleith or whatever you call it, but it’s not exactly a very convenient place to live.

  11. HollyGoSmitely

Nice light, nice decor, though I’ve never been a fan of floating staircases — they make me nervous! But the kitchen is way small for $2.5 million. I think the kitchen in my 630 sf. 1-BR apartment has almost as much storage space.

This is more of a staging issue, but I found the placement of the funky couch in the master suite odd. Would anyone really lounge there, facing the closet? I could see having something to sit on while you’re dressing, but that couch looks too big and stylized for a changing station — it’s better for a study. It’s a large space in front of those closets, and it almost seems like they didn’t know what to do with it.

Lastly, the way that big-ass Range Rover is parked makes it look like you can’t fit another vehicle in that two-car garage (maybe a SmartCar or Mini). They should have parked the RR closer to the wall on the left and cleared out the bikes and bags along the other side. Or used a more reasonable-sized vehicle for the photo.

  12. Larchie

Spectacular! Except I would have liked to see some asymmetry in the backyard design. As designed it seems a poor fit for the style of the house, to suddenly skew the grid and opt for a symmetric, not-entirely-functional ordering of spaces. There’s too much visual tension there.

  13. I’m totally diggin the lap pool in the backyard.

Some people will pick at anything. Yes. . . we all want the fake ice/crystals in the bathroom sink, but they probably do not convey.

I’ll toss out an obscure dig just because some PoP commenters are so particular — the Kohler Rialto toilet has a small footprint but does not efficiently flush, even for a low flow toilet. Rest easy, if you can $$ up for this mod statement house your s@#! probably don’t stink nohow.

  14. Joe

Nice, but with any other folks in the house, I guess the occupants of the master suite have to do their loud screwing in the bathroom? There is no door between the master bedroom and every other room in the house.

  15. elizqueenmama

I’m not really sure what I think of this place. House porn, yes. But there were what, three living rooms? And a too small kitchen with a half-assed dining room? Should totally lose the living room on the kitchen level and make that a big dining/entertainment space, all revolving around the kitchen. The current layout makes it feel like a group house – each bedroom with a different level, each with its own living space, but, hey, let’s share a little kitchen.

    Just odd.

    Oh, and WAY overpriced.

  16. George

It looks cool, but for $2.5 million, there are a few thigns I dont like. There is no door to the master suite, just stairs. I also think the back deck could be bigger, but the patio is nice. I do like the second floor living area though.

  17. Laurie

    LOL, Pennywise!

  18. Andy (2)

I do believe I posted a link to this on the last weeks’ House Porn comments – the “modern” by Howard.
Its a great house – but obviously not built with kids in mind. I wonder if you could put a rolling door/retractable floor over the stairs in the master to serve as a door – perhaps negotiate $50k off for that to be installed.
Otherwise it is a house full of great spaces.
The dining room is gig enough for 8 – I’d hardly call that small – yeah sure the cyrstals are strange but not worht a ding on the house. I’d ding the house if the master crapper isn’t in its own little room – that is my biggest pet peeve of many of the house porn and GDoN houses.

  19. Los Politico

I’ll add that the concrete fence is a cool idea, never seen that done on a row house before.

I think the 3 bedrooms 3 living rooms layout is for the entourage types. Makes me think Turtle will be coming up from the basement when I get my breakfast.

  20. sean

whats interests me most are the walls in the backyard. cuz i need new fences and i like how solid, yet thin it seems. anyone know what it is exactly? or how its constructed?

  21. Nichole

No ding on the fake ice, it’s just a weird choice is all. And the conversation I’ve crafted in my head between the designer and the agent when coming up with it is hilarious.

  22. Eric in Ledroit

    lol at people’s negativity

  23. Ashley

Ha, this house was rumored to have been built to host the Real WOrld cast a few years ago by Gtown students. Personally, I love it, although, it really sticks out in the neighborhood.

  24. I remember

I remember when the house fell, scary, I lived like 2 houses down. I thought we were next.

  25. Esmeralda

    Eric, we’re all critics.

This is GREAT house porn, PoP. Yeah, it’s not all to my personal taste (I don’t get the multiple living rooms or double-height ceilings, for instance – yeah, you get lots of light, but you also lose the potential for a really nice bedroom, plus they lend themselves to draftiness), but it’s still pretty gorgeous.

Totally out of scale for the neighborhood, though (take a look on street view). And do they have rats around there? Because that was my first thought when I saw the hot tub – I’d be afraid of the critters jumping in with me!

  26. Ice-Tina

    THE BOMB!!!!

  27. Victoriam

I wish modern would start getting more – well modern, or at least different. Do love the backyard.

and Eric in Ledroit – get over yourself – opinions that differ from yours are not negative, just different. There is no pope of architecture or design.

  28. ro

@sean: looks like concrete paneling. see these a lot in LA. very pricey

  29. sheepprofessor

Modernism is/was a bad idea. This place is annoying and will look stupid in 10-15 years. I would only live in a place like this if I was poor, not if I was rich. Some sleazy insurance company lobbyist will buy this place with all of the money he has stolen from cancer-ridden children. They should tear this place down and put up a vacant lot.

  30. DC

I think this house is beautiful, but it is way out of place in that neighborhood. And even worse, its massing is WAY out of proportion with the other houses. It comes right up to the street when most houses are set back 15 feet or so.

Also, it’s in Burleith, not Georgetown.

  31. Warderite

I really can’t speak to the value of any house that’s that expensive, but wow, I love it. The light, the fresh air from the balconies, the swank backyard… not to mention the master bath…. awesome.

  32. Eli

Love it. And who needs more bedrooms? I’d rather have the light and open space. I would say it’s a bit overpriced…but it *is* in Georgetown.

  33. Kevin

My friend was living the house when it fell down. Thankfully wasn’t there when it actually collapsed of course. I’m sure it was just a coincidence that the landlord was building the house next door when caused his other property to collapse, allowing him to build another fancy house…
