Judging Windows – Yeah I’m Serious

IMG_2352

I thought the windows on this house in Capitol Hill were pretty wild. I’ll be honest, I’m not really digging them but I’m wondering if anyone likes this style?

    I dig them.

  • Herb

Wild? Like wild as in an endangered species ’cause no one else should be allowed to do this in an old brick rowhouse?

  • Heather

I bet they make it really easy to sling an arrow at your neighbors without them being able to hit you back very easily.

  • NewShawNeighbor

Well, I would prefer the originals, but one never knows what condition the front wall and windows were in when these windows were added, so I’m giving the owners the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think they’re horrible though.

  • Mal

    They’re… curious looking… I like Heather’s idea! Made me laugh :)

  • TonyS

    reallly bad

  • Larchie

The whole row house looks like a modern infill – note the lack of any decorative brickwork at the top. I think it blends well without being slavishly imitating of the historical details. One school of thought when making additions to historic structures is to design it so that it is clearly visibile what is original and what is new, while still being compatible with the existing.

    thumbs down.
    thumbs way down.
thumbs pulled out of hands and buried in compost.
    then burned.
ashes mixed with a variety of terrible things, poured in plastic bags, and thrown against the windows.

I actually like them a lot. I completely agree with Larchie.

is it just me, or does it look like a one eyed monster on the left, about to pounce upon a very scared two eyed house on the right?? i bet the renovators were hunters…

I grew up in Columbia, MD which kicked off its “planned city” back in the 70′s. This place looks like a bunch of townhouses in the older villages of the city…not cute. I feel like the cousins of the Brady bunch kids may hop out of the door at any moment. To each their own though I guess.

There are few houses like this in the neighborhood with windows and style that don’t match. Not that things have to be cookie-cutter, but I can’t say I’m a fan. Sticks out like a sore thumb.

  • Lee.Watkins

    Ugly. very ugly.

The view prob. looks nice from the inside of the house though.

It has potential. I’m a designer & I would love to get my hands on this one! They need to put a new modern glass door to go with the windows. I would paint the bricks & trim. They need a minimalist modern landscaping to go with the clean lines on the house. Then to finish off the look I would put a modern sculpture in the yard. Then the house would make sense. That’s just me!

  • I like this. Floor to ceiling light is a good thing to me.

Some landscaping and a new door treatment and this could be great.
