“Dear PoP,

I heard there’s a pet costume contest/parade in Petworth this coming Wednesday.  Do you have any details? My dog and I are ready to show off our costumes!”

Following is the info from the organizer.  I’ll be there as a guest judge so if in anyone wants to bribe me, I’ve been dreaming of some pumpkin pie…

“Those of us on the Petworth Dogs listserv http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/PetworthDogs/ would like to invite you to the:

2009 Petworth Dog Walk Halloween
a costume celebration of dogs and owners
Wednesday, October 28, 7pm
@ Domku Restaurant
821 Upshur St NW
http://domkucafe.com

Contestants – meet at 6pm at the Clark School (7th and Alison Streets NW) to wear out your favorite pooch, before suiting them up in a great costume. From there, we’ll walk our bedazzled best friends down to Upshur Street where they’ll be judged on:

* Best Doggie Costume – the classic, dress ‘em up!
* Best Twins – Celebrating how dogs and owners can look alike
* Best Trick – Costume or not, show your dog’s skills

— We have prizes for every category!  —

The Domku patio will be the reviewing stand and the post-parade party spot.  Feel free to print out copies of our flier and take them with you when you’re out walking. When you see a dog + owner, hand them a flier and encourage them to come out as a participant or observer: http://wayan.com/files/petworth_dog_walk_2009.pdf

Good Deal Or Not? Open Floorplan Renovation Edition

IMG_0236

This home is located at 613 Upshur Street, NW:

The flier says:

“Recent reconstruction has turned this GRAND porch-front into a neighborhood showplace! All new EVERYTHING: systems, floors, roof, walls, kitchen, baths, windows +more! 19′ wide with fully finished basement and AMAZING bonus loft/office in 2-LVL master bedroom! DEEP backyard with two car private parking! Just 4 blocks to METRO!”

More info found here and a virtual tour found here.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting the inside to look like this at all. I kinda dig the open feel. And of course I’m a huge supporter of the bay windows. What do you guys think of the reno? Does $549,000 sound reasonable for this 4 bed/3.5 bath home?

Crepes Scuttlebutt No Longer Scuttlebutt – Two Crepes Spots Coming to 14th Street near S!

IMG_0296

A couple of weeks ago I said that a Crepes Place was coming to 1736 14th Street, NW in the old Circle Boutique spot. Well I was close, it turns out Point Chaud Cafe & Crepes will be opening up there. I’m not sure if they’re affiliated with Crepes-a-Go-Go but it sounds awesome! And if that weren’t good enough another Crepes spot, Crepes on the Corner, is coming to the corner of 14th and S in the old Garden District space.

According to the Crepes on the Corner Web site:

“Coming to DC December 2009, owners Chef Vincent Bradberry and Joe Carmack of Garden District bring a simple and genuine crêperie to 14th Street, NW. Both are long time Mid-City business guys with a mindset to use local ingredients and produce.

Expect delicious crpes made fresh to order, homemade soups, salads, and a great cup of coffee. This is the place to get a healthy quick bite for lunch, an after dinner dessert crepe, and to stop by as the bars close.”

What are the odds of two crepes spots opening so close to each other?

Totally Random Reader Sighting on Saturday

photo(2), originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

The reader writes:

“Just saw four guys on horses going down Columbia road, near Ontario. One of them trotted on the sidewalk and the horse left a nice pile of manure behind.”

Who are these people? Isn’t there some horse show going on at the Verizon Center? Totally bizarre sighting for Columbia Road…

Columbia Heights Heritage Trail Unveiling a Great Success

IMG_0276

The Columbia Heritage Trail unveiling was a great success and managed to beat the rain on Saturday afternoon. The turnout was spectacular. Kojo Nnamdi from WAMU (88.5) was the emcee and there were speeches by Ward 3 Council Member Mary Cheh and Ward 1 Council Member Jim Graham (among others).

The festivities took place at the new Columbia Heights Plaza and the actual unveiling took place just south on 14th St. in front of The Heights restaurant:

Wild Street Art on Newton Street

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Have you seen this art on Newton St. between 14th and 16th? Any ideas on its origin? Hardly your standard dilapidated building graffiti.”

Anyone know who the artist is?

Shootings Continue This Weekend

On top of yesterday and this morning’s shootings I’ve just received word that there was a shooting on the 1300 block of Euclid Street, NW at 6:19pm Saturday night. A DC ALERT message went out saying it was 1300 block of Fairmont but unless there were two shootings within minutes of each other it was probably on Euclid. I’m told a Howard University student went to the hospital and it seems like the shooting was random. More info as it becomes available from the authorities.

Ed. Note: I’ll be on Fox 5 News at 10pm tonight speaking about neighborhood violence.

UPDATE from MPD:

“At about 6;00 pm an adult female was shot in the leg while in the 1300 block of euclid St. There is no known motive at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call 202 727-9099.

Sadly Already Many More Shootings to Report

IMG_3468, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Just in from CM Bowser (received around 11am):

“Neighbors- MPD is on the scene in 800 Block of Upshur ST NW investigating a police pursuit and officer involved shooting. Expect heavy police presence and road closures.”

From MPD Friday evening:

“Earlier tonight, around 230 am, MPD units were called to the area of 2nd and Elm Street for the sounds of gunshots. The units canvassed the area and located a crime scene in the 2200 block of 2nd street where 2 adult victims were both shot and transported to local hopitals. They are both in stable condition. Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to cal 727-9099.”

From MPD (Friday 11:35pm):

“4d units are on the scene of a fatal shooting of an adult male in the 1200 blk Crittenden Street, NW.”

UPDATE on Upshur St. Shooting from MPD:

“This morning at approximately 1020 we received a call for suspects attempting to break into a car in the 700 blk of Randolph. The officers arrived on the scene quickly and chased the suspects. One suspect was caught in the 4100 blk of 8th St. As the officer was attempting to place him under arrest, a struggled began and the suspect pulled a gun on the officer. The officer defended himself by firing at the suspect. After being shot by the officer, the suspect still managed to retrieve his weapon and run to the 800 blk of Upshur St where officers apprehended him. Unfortunately, the suspect did not survive the gunshot wound. We arrested 3 suspects and recovered 2 handguns in this case.
