The windows and carving around them are pretty fresh.

“Dear PoP,
Looks like Cleveland Park Liquors cancelled the big theme wine tasting scheduled for Oct. 28th I mentioned to you a while back. Instead they are having it on October, 21. They changed the theme from Portuguese wines to “ world value.” October 21 from 5:30 – 8:30pm.
Also, looks like they are doing 20% off cases (mixed or solid) of still wines until Thursday. They usually have this big sale once a month with little notice to keep you guessing.
I can’t help but wonder if the moving of the wine tasting from next week to this week is in response to Weygandt’s opening (also today). And the horse race begins! Here’s hoping that when it is all over the neighborhood finds a way to support both stores. I worry they will be back to filling a vacant store front soon enough though.”

From an email:
A small Quaker preschool at DuPont Circle needs volunteers Thursday, Friday and Saturday for a PLAYGROUND BUILD! We are replacing a 20+ year old playground at School for Friends, and we could use your help.
A group called Learning Structures helped design the new playground, and will be down this week guiding the build. We need some skilled workers for Thursday and Friday, and anybody who can come to help out Saturday is welcome.
Please contact Roxana Geffen (roxanag@gmail.com) if you can help! On Saturday, we need all skill levels for building, as well as help with child care and general logistics.
Skill levels:
1 I’m nice to be with
2 Basic drill-handling and hammering
3 I’ve built a deck and done a reasonable amount of carpentry
4 Skilled carpenter, worked professionally or equivalent
We also welcome donations of food, water, funds or tools (we can give you our tax id & receipt!).

“Dear PoP,
I got the tip from a neighbor that 4714 15th St. NW (formerly the “no heat or AC” GDON) was flipped and back on the market. This time it’s got a fireplace, new HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and lots more. Formerly listed at $389,000 and sold for $100,000 less, it’s now up for sale at $629,000. That’s a pretty sweet potential profit.”

Do you think the new price matches the renovations?

Congrats to the owners of Pete’s Apizza (14th and Irving by the Columbia Heights metro). From an email:
“We just got word that Tom and Joel have been invited to the Treasury Department to attend a small business roundtable with President Obama, who is expected to mention Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza in a speech about federal efforts to increase lending to small businesses. Pete’s is being held up as an example of a business benefiting from an SBA program meant for small businesses.”
Very, very cool. Congrats again!

Seafood & Crab is located at 1936 14th Street, NW. As I’ve mentioned in the past this spot has one of the longest running “grand opening” signs in town. I’ve also noted that I thought crab was a type of seafood. Anyway, it’s time to dispense with such frivolous thoughts and ask the important question – how’s the food?

“Dear PoP,
Last night, I heard shots fired near the corner of 8th and N. Soon after, there were a number of police cars heard throughout the area. Have you heard anything about this?”
The following info was sent out by MPD:
“At approximately 7:15 PM an adult female was the victim of a shooting at 7th and N St NW. She was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.”
Piccante Pizza is now open at 2120 18th Street, NW in Adams Morgan. I walked by in the late morning as the place was opening up so I didn’t get to try the pizza but the space, while small, looks pretty cool. Anyone happen to try the pizza yet?
Couple more photos after the jump. (more…)

There was a shooting in the Petworth Safeway Parking lot (3830 Georgia Ave NW) around 8:30pm Tuesday evening. I will first give official reports, reader emails then I will tell you what I learned on my own.
First from MPD Commander Linda Brown:
“4d units on the scene of a shooting in front of the safeway at Georgia and Randolph. Male victim transported to local hospital in critical condition. Lookout for 3-5 black males last seen running behind the safeway. Anyone with any information about this incident, please call 202-727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIM(e).”
From CM Muriel Bowser:
“Neighbors- I regret to inform you that MPD is investigating a shooting on Georgia Avenue in front of the Petworth Safeway. I’m currently on the scene with Chief Cathy Lanier.
Please see description of the incident and lookout information posted by Commander Brown below. MPD will alert us to details as they become available.”
From a reader:
“I live on the 800 block of Quincy St NW and heard two gunshots shortly after 8 tonight. About 15 minutes later, police were taping off my block and a helicopter was circling overhead. If you have any info on this, I’m sure our fellow Petworth residents would appreciate hearing about it.”
Thanks to all the readers who sent in reports of shots fired, street closings and police presence. I was out to dinner with my Aunt and Uncle when I got into a cab and realized I had about a dozen emails about this incident. I got out of the cab at my house and asked a neighbor if she heard anything.
Only when I got a few steps closer did I realize she was crying. Apparently the person shot was a youth of only 15 or 16 years old who was friends with her son. She said the boy shot was returning from the Theodore Roosevelt Football game. She said he was shot twice in the head and has passed away is currently in critical condition at the hospital. I will have to confirm this info as it is released from the authorities but I have no reason to doubt her. My neighbor was understandably upset and was very worried about her own children. These incidents are so painfully sad. They really illustrate the two worlds that exist within many DC neighborhoods.
More info as it becomes available from the authorities.

Ever since I asked folks about what ethnic restaurant their neighborhood was missing, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for delis (since they were mentioned a few times). I noticed Jack’s Delicatessen located on the 600 block of Columbia Road, NW not far from Georgia Ave. I’m wondering if any of the long term residents remember this spot? Do you think a deli located on a residential block like this could do good business?
