“Dear PoP,
So, the holidays are looming. I, for one, am having family come to visit, but I don’t have enough room for all of them. They want to rent an apartment near me for the Thanksgiving weekend; craigslist doesn’t have anything in our area (Columbia Heights)– most of the vacation rentals listed there are on Capitol Hill. Do you suppose this is something worth throwing out to your readers? I wonder if any of them are either looking to house visitors, or looking to make a little cash while they’re out of town.”
If anyone is leaving town and would like to rent out their home/apartment feel free to leave contact info in the comments. On that note – where do you guys usually have guests stay when they visit DC?

Locally I prefer NPR and WPFW. I also listen to Seattle's KEXP on the internet.
PoP can you arrange a tour...it might be less sketchy coming from you.

Some larger apartment building offer guest suites in the building–maybe your building has something like that?
i like to have my guests stay in spraypainted mobile trailers abandoned by construction companies.
Potentially,depending on dates. dhprdm@gwumc.edu
I’m in a similar situation and here is where I was planning to look: http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/district-of-columbia-dc
What are the dates. Would you consider Petworth?
Isn’t this what hotels are for?
i always have my family stay at the Intown Uptown Inn: http://www.intownuptowninn.com/
it is a bed and breakfast that is a waaay better value than any hotels in dc. they also serve gourmet breakfast and the proprietor is an AWESOME host.
Hotels are best for single people, maybe a couple. But when you’re talking about two couples and their teenagers, a hotel is a fallback, not a first choice.
The Akwaaba B&B is great too. It’s located at 16th & R Sts NW, DC 20009, (202) 328-3510 or http://www.akwaaba.com
I will be out of town for Thanksgiving and have a place in Columbia Heights. Please email me, nicolegorney@gmail.com

Stay in a historic alley rowhouse!
Very pet friendly and near a dog park in Foggy Bottom.
Craigslist – under “Vacation Rentals” actually returns 5 hits, 2 or 3 of them actually in CH try http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/vac/1451701662.html
Also in Petworth – http://mydcplace.blogspot.com/
You might also look at http://www.airbnb.com. Also people often look for pet sitters over holidays, try posting your own ad on CL under housing wanted.
Craigslist is all about key search words. To actually find something in DC, try putting unique DC words – Smithsonian – Metro – white house – in the search box.
Two bed and breakfasts:
The Adams Inn on Lanier Place
The Kalorama House on Mintwood Place
When I lived in Petworth my parents stayed at the Courtyard Marriot in Silver Spring. It was close by and the parking was free. (My mother refuses to fly, so they drove from home in East Tennessee). When I lived in Columbia Heights, my parents stayed at the Key Bridge Marriot — mostly because that was the hotel they stayed at when they used to come down to DC from Philly in the 1970s before I was born.
When visiting family in Chicago for the holidays, we all stay in a hotel on Michigan Avenue and rent several rooms. Although now between my brother’s new place and my aunts and uncles, I think we have enough spare rooms for all of us there.
And what’s that Mennonite hostel on Longfellow or Kennedy near 16th street? I looks like a nice place…
There’s also the affordable Bloomingdale Inn on 1st Street near Howard U.
I have a 3 bedroom/2 bath condo with views from RFK to Congress to the Washington Monument – a few blocks south of CH metro and a few blocks north of U street metro. Contact me through my blog.
